Living Rock Desert Dwellings Introduce
Living Rock Desert Dwellings, located in Terlingua, TX 79852, offers an authentic desert camping experience for those seeking a rustic and secluded getaway. As part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, it provides a unique opportunity to connect with the natural beauty of the Terlingua region.
The campground is situated about half a mile from town, accessible via a dirt road that is best suited for SUVs or trucks, though cars can navigate it with caution. The terrain features ruts and holes, contributing to the rugged nature of the location. Sites 1-6 are designated for tent camping only, requiring campers to carry their gear to the site. Site 8 and similar areas offer options for smaller camper vehicles. The views from the campground are highly praised, offering some of the best vistas in Terlingua.
Living Rock Desert Dwellings emphasizes a true camping experience, with limited amenities. There are no power, water, sewer, internet, or TV connections available. However, a nearby cell tower provides reliable cell service. The campground does offer a well-maintained bathroom facility with two toilets and a spacious shower house.
Visitors should be prepared for off-grid camping. It is advised to arrive during daylight hours due to the challenging access road and steep grades. Bringing ample water and firewood (especially during colder months) is essential. A 5-gallon water tank is recommended for convenient water access.
The campground offers a peaceful and quiet environment, allowing for a genuine escape from everyday life. The owner, Marc, is known for his honesty, helpfulness, and knowledge of the area. He is communicative and open about the campground's features and limitations.
Living Rock Desert Dwellings is ideal for campers seeking a true desert experience with breathtaking views and a quiet atmosphere. While amenities are basic, the location provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of Terlingua and the surrounding area.

I’ll give Marc’s place a solid 5 star rating. There’s good and bad, so please decide if it’s for you. It’s ½ of a mile out of town. It’s up a dirt road that’s best for SUV’s or trucks. A car can make it, but it has lots of ruts and holes. It’s real camping. Sites 1 – 6 are tent camping only; you park and carry your stuff to the site. I was in spot 8. It’s a little further up the road, but it has a great view. we pulled the camper up the hill and parked the 21 foot camper. Was a squeeze, but it worked ! The bathroom is great. Two toilets and a nice big shower house. The view is great and it’s soooo quiet. No power / water / sewer connection / internet / TV connections. There’s a cell tower not far away, and I had 4 or 5 bars ! He was honest with me about the campground. Appreciate him not blowing smoke. Very cool with an early check in. Overall, a great experience. You just have to know what you are getting into.
Maybe the best views in Terlingua! Otters Den Adobe cabin fit our family of 5 snuggly and kept us warm in the December winds. It was a great place to camp - and if camping is what you've got in mind, its great. I'd suggest getting there in daylight as the road is hard to find and extrmely rough with a steep grade. Bring lots of water. There is not running water at your site (and firewood if you're there in the winter - the nights and mornings are cold!) What I wish we had brought: a 5 gallon water tank for easy water access...fast hand washing, and a possible place to put some hot water to wash hair and dishes in case the hot water is out at the bath house/community kitchen. Marc is a nice guy and we enjoyed time talking with him about Terlingua and his vision for Livingrock Campground.
The view is really good, and the shower and sanitary facilities are clean. But the rest disappointed. Hardly anything signposted, rubbish and rubble everywhere. Looks like you started something and lost interest in it a long time ago.
Great camping experience with all the necessities....showers, bathroom and coffee machine! Stayed at Otters Den, yurt. Unbeatable views of sunrise and sunset.
Great campsites overlooking Terlingua and Big Bend. The new outhouse with flushing toilets was a big plus. 4X4 cars/trucks are needed to get to the campsites as it is a steep grade and a bumpy dirt road
