Lolo Creek Campground and Picnic Area is a hidden gem nestled within the pristine landscape of Lolo National Forest. Located along the historic Lolo Trail, this campground offers a unique opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of Montana's wilderness while providing essential amenities for travelers. Whether you're planning a family trip, a solo adventure, or a peaceful getaway with friends, Lolo Creek Campground and Picnic Area is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
This primitive campground sits at an elevation of 4,600 feet, surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills. The area is known for its lush greenery, crystal-clear streams, and abundant wildlife, making it a perfect spot for hiking, fishing, and photography. Lolo Creek itself is a major attraction, offering opportunities for swimming, wading, and enjoying the cool mountain water during warmer months.
Lolo Creek Campground features 14 tent-only sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. While there are no hookups or RV facilities available, the campground provides basic necessities such as potable water spigots and vault-style toilets. The sites are spread out enough to ensure privacy, with many offering shade from the surrounding trees throughout the day. During your stay, you'll experience the serenity of nature and the convenience of being close to trails and scenic views.
For those looking for a more secluded experience, Lolo Creek Campground offers first-come-first-served sites, allowing visitors to find their perfect spot without prior reservations. The area is particularly popular in the summer months, but it's less crowded during spring and fall, making it an excellent choice for off-peak season visits.
Adjacent to the campground, the Lolo Creek Picnic Area provides a shaded picnic shelter with tables and fire rings, perfect for family meals or a quick bite while exploring the area. The nearby Lolo National Forest offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking trails that lead to breathtaking overlooks, scenic drives, and fishing spots in nearby rivers and streams.
Lolo Creek Campground is also a great base camp for exploring other nearby attractions, such as Glacier National Park, which is only a short drive away. The area's rich history, including its significance during the Lewis and Clark Expedition, adds an educational dimension to your visit, making it a memorable experience for history buffs.
Customer feedback highlights the campground's natural beauty and privacy, with many visitors praising the peaceful atmosphere and stunning views. However, some guests note that there are no showers or cell service available, which is typical of primitive camping experiences. One visitor described their site as "primitive but beautiful," emphasizing the charm of being disconnected from modern conveniences while surrounded by nature.
Overall, Lolo Creek Campground and Picnic Area offers a unique blend of rustic charm and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic outdoor experience in Montana. Customer Reviews
It's primitive but beautiful. Our site was in the trees enough to avoid the sun pretty much all day. No showers...I'd have given it a 5 if they did. No cell or internet service at all.
Nice little campground on a first come first served basis. Was there in June 2022 and found a fairly private site with a picnic table and a fire ring. Potable water and vault toilet very close by.
Went camping for two days and it was awesome! We were next to the creek with the peaceful sound of gently flowing water. There is water available for you to use next to the campsite as well. There is also a port a potty for use-although I’m not sure how many. There’s a dumpster for your trash-PLEASE USE IT. My husband and I were thankful that we came behind a clean group of people but our neighboring campers weren’t as lucky. We will definitely be back!
Lolo Creek has been a great experience for most of my life. I have been going camping at this spot since 1980, I was about 4 years old. Best place to make memories with generations of family.
Nice place to camp. Avoid tent spots 1&2 unless you don’t mind hearing 18-Wheelers and other vehicles driving by. The plus side is that is next to the clean, cool creek and the waters flowing are soothing enough to distract the cacophony of the aforementioned.
