A True North Shore Gem: Discover the Lower Campground at Temperance River State Park
For those of us living in or visiting Minnesota, the North Shore of Lake Superior holds a special, almost magnetic, appeal. It’s where the woods meet the big lake, offering rugged beauty and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. When it comes to finding that perfect spot to pitch a tent and truly unwind, the Lower Campground at Temperance River State Park near Schroeder, MN, is a location that seasoned campers consistently seek out. This guide is your resource for learning more about this beloved destination, a place where the sound of the waves is your nightly lullaby.
The Lower Campground is a core component of the camping experience at the expansive Temperance River State Park. It offers a more rustic, close-to-nature alternative to the park’s Upper Campground, focusing on traditional tent and trailer camping without electrical hookups. Its true distinction, however, lies in its proximity to the vast expanse of Lake Superior. As many local enthusiasts will tell you, this campground is celebrated for providing some of the most stunning, unimpeded lake views you can find in the entire Minnesota State Park system.
Location and Accessibility: Right on the Shoreline
The Lower Campground is nestled directly along the legendary North Shore Scenic Drive (Highway 61) in a prime location in northeastern Minnesota. It is situated just northeast of the small community of Schroeder, offering an ideal base camp for exploring the surrounding natural attractions, including the Temperance River gorge and waterfalls.
While the campground is easily accessible by vehicle from Highway 61, its low-lying position creates a sense of peaceful seclusion. The park's dual campground system—Upper and Lower—is designed to cater to different camping preferences. While the Upper Campground is higher up and includes all of the park’s available electric sites and the main shower house, the Lower Campground sits closer to the lake level. Access to the full range of park amenities, like hot showers, requires a short walk or drive to the Upper Campground area. This trade-off is often considered well worth it by those who value the unparalleled lakeside experience the Lower Campground provides.

It’s important for campers to note that the primary services for electric hookups and hot showers are located in the Upper Campground.
Features / Highlights That Make It Special
The Lower Campground’s appeal is deeply rooted in its spectacular setting and its reputation for a quiet, quintessential North Shore camping experience. It’s the features tied to its unique location that truly make it a stand-out spot for Minnesota outdoor lovers.

What is Worth Choosing the Lower Campground?
Choosing the Lower Campground is a conscious decision to prioritize **location, quiet, and proximity to Lake Superior** over electric hookups and immediate access to a hot shower. For many Minnesotans, this location represents the *authentic* North Shore camping experience. The value here is immeasurable, stemming from the feeling of waking up so close to the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area.
Past visitors consistently emphasize the **lakefront sites** as being entirely worth the potential short hike to the main restrooms or the seasonal nature of the full facilities. The beautiful, peaceful, and secluded nature, thanks to the natural separation provided by the woods and the non-electric sites, is a major draw. As one happy camper noted, the staff is typically "super nice," and the rates are always reasonable for a spot of this caliber. If your camping checklist includes the sound of waves, the scent of pine and fresh lake air, and views you can't get anywhere else, the Lower Campground is the clear choice for your next escape.

You can't beat the views. The lower campground is right at the lake level. You are steps from the lake. Plus, the picnic grounds are right here. The bathrooms are a short hike, but you can't get a better spot. Sites 40-45 are on the lake if you can't get them, hit the upper campground.
Beautiful campground. Plenty of trees and bushes between the spots. The Lake shore is so beautiful and peaceful. I went in September and actually went swimming. Yes it's cold but refreshing. The rates are reasonable and the lady at the office was super nice. Highly recommend.
Great place to visit for a few days. Lots of nice hikes in the area and a great view of the lake. The kids love playing on the rocks near shore.
Wonderful view of and access to Lake Superior
Bit of road noise, but otherwise great campsites.
