Lower Campground Introduce

Lower Campground is a popular destination for campers and outdoor enthusiasts located at County Rd 38 NE, Alexandria, MN 56308. Nestled along the shores of Lake Winnibigosh, this campground offers a unique combination of natural beauty, recreational activities, and convenient amenities. Whether you're traveling with family, friends, or on your own, Lower Campground provides a variety of camping options and services to cater to different needs.

One of the standout features of Lower Campground is its prime location on the lake. This makes it an ideal spot for boaters and anglers, as you can easily beach your boat right on the shore. The campground is known for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during peak seasons when it's one of the busiest campgrounds in the state. While the central area can feel crowded and less private, those who enjoy socializing and being close to water activities often find it appealing.

Lower Campground offers a range of amenities to ensure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. The restrooms are well-maintained and cleaned regularly, which has been noted as a positive aspect by many visitors. The grounds are kept in good condition, with plenty of shade provided by the surrounding trees. However, it's important to be cautious of dead limbs, especially during windy days, as mentioned by some guests.

The campground also provides access to beaches that are great for smaller children and toddlers. While the main beach is well-utilized, there are other areas like the west end that offer different experiences, though they may require more exploration to fully enjoy. The campground's proximity to Lake Winnibigosh means you'll often hear the soothing sounds of nature, with the exception of occasional noise from untrained dogs.

When it comes to activities, Lower Campground is a hub for outdoor recreation. In addition to camping and boating, visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking, and simply taking in the scenic views of the lake. The breezes off the water can make for pleasant evenings, especially after July 4th when the crowds may have thinned slightly.

Customer Feedback

Lower Campground has received mixed feedback from visitors, reflecting both its popularity and unique characteristics:

  • "This is one of the busiest campgrounds in the state and it is absolutely cramped and packed in. Especially in the center area there is no privacy, even the outer spots are not very secluded."
  • "However if you love to mingle and love the water it might suit you. The appeal of this campground is it is right on the lake and you can beach your boat on shore."
  • "Nice camping grounds! Maintained fair. Love the cover that the trees provide for shade- the dead limbs can be a gamble if the breeze is stiff enough. The views off the lake are nice."

While some visitors appreciate the vibrant atmosphere and convenient amenities, others emphasize the importance of privacy and seclusion. For those who prioritize peaceful relaxation, Lower Campground may not be the best choice. However, for those seeking an active outdoor experience with easy access to water-based activities, it can be a great option.

Overall, Lower Campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and lakeside charm. Whether you're looking for an energetic camping experience or simply a place to enjoy nature, this campground provides something for everyone.

This is one of the busiest campgrounds in the state and it is absolutely cramped and packed in. Especially in the center area there is no privacy, even the outer spots are not very secluded. There are only 2 small bathrooms on each end of this giant campground. Avoid at all cost if you want any relaxation. However if you love to mingle and love the water it might suit you. The appeal of this campground is it is right on the lake and you can beach your boat on shore.

Nice camping grounds! Maintained fair. Love the cover that the trees provide for shade- the dead limbs can be a gamble if the breeze is stiff enough. The views off the lake are nice. Enjoyed the breeze off said lake during our stay post July4. The beach we’re all the boats land is great for smaller kids/toddlers. Never made it to the beach on the west end. Restrooms were cleaned and maintained well. Fairly quiet with the exception of persons with dog(s)/owners that have no guidance/training for boundaries.

Campground is kind of packed in, the only good thing I saw is that it is right along the beach. The upper campground is much more remote and quiet.

Very open with no privacy. We went during the week and it's still very loud with obnoxious boaters. Not a very good place to enjoy kayaking or camping

At MN State Park Lake Carlos. What a beautiful fall weekend we just experienced. Calm conditions through out the weekend. Light rain Friday evening and night. Made for a great Saturday and Sunday.
