Lower Karr Canyon Campground Introduce

Nestled in the heart of the Lincoln National Forest, Lower Karr Canyon Campground offers a tranquil escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Located along Forest Road 63 in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, this campground is a hidden gem that promises a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The campground features 5-6 well-maintained campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. The sites are nestled among tall trees, providing ample shade and a serene atmosphere. For those seeking a bit more privacy, there are two elevated sites above the restroom area that offer a more secluded experience.

One of the standout features of Lower Karr Canyon Campground is its composting toilet, which adds a touch of convenience to your camping experience. The narrow valley and tall trees mean that the canyon stays cooler than surrounding areas, making it an ideal spot for summer camping. However, be prepared for a bumpy ride to get there—the rough road ensures that the campground remains quiet and uncrowded.

Here’s what some of our satisfied campers have to say:

  • "Hidden gem! Super bumpy road to get there but that just means you likely won’t see very much road traffic. Composting toilet onsite! Because of the valley’s narrow width and tall trees, the sun rises late and sets early. So the canyon stays cooler than surrounding areas that get more sunlight."
  • "Nice secluded campground. This is definitely the place to go if you want to get away from people. I camped here in late August and didn’t see anyone else the whole weekend. There are 5-6 camp sites with a picnic table and fire ring. The site itself is nothing too special, but it's very wooded and nice and quiet."
  • "There are 2 sites up the valley above the restroom that are much nicer than those down near the road."

Whether you're looking for a quiet weekend in nature or a basecamp for exploring the Lincoln National Forest, Lower Karr Canyon Campground is the perfect destination. Pack your gear, prepare for a bit of adventure, and come experience the beauty and tranquility of this secluded New Mexico campground.

We ended up switching to a spot closer to Benson Ridge as there were better spots available. The road through Lower Karr is difficult to traverse without high clearance (would not recommend unless driving SUV or 4WD). It also doesn’t have many flat spots, but there are maybe one or two gems if you’re okay sleeping within 50-100 feet of the road.

Great camping location, especially further west into the unimproved areas. Fewer people out there usually. (Probably due to distance from the vault toilets.) Bring a hummingbird feeder for great entertainment. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the peace and quiet. Have visited this spot almost yearly for almost a decade, always have a great trip. By the way, if you're awoken in the middle of the night by a blood curdling scream, it may just be a fox in heat!
