Lower Shake Trailhead Introduce

Welcome to Lower Shake Trailhead, a campground and RV park area located in the scenic Lake Hughes, California. This site offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a noteworthy destination for local outdoor enthusiasts.

Historically, the area, including the now-closed Upper Shake, was a Native American camp before European settlement. The region is known for its geological features, particularly the large stone boulders that feature acorn grinding bowls, a testament to its past inhabitants. Both Lower and Upper Shake are named due to their location along a fault line.

Lower Shake Trailhead provides access to hiking trails that lead to the former Upper Shake campground. While Upper Shake is currently closed, Lower Shake remains accessible, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding environment.

It is important to note that the area has recently been impacted by a fire. While many trees remain intact, the first significant rainfall post-fire may lead to rock slides, creating potentially dangerous conditions. Visitors should exercise caution and stay informed about current conditions before venturing into the area.

Although the provided information does not detail specific campground services or amenities, the site's historical background and natural surroundings offer a unique outdoor experience. Be sure to research current accessibility and safety information before planning your visit.

Upper Shake was Native American camp before whites came. The huge stone boulders have acorn grinding bowls worn into stone. This was small campground in ,1960's, trail goes to upper shake ( both named because it sits on Fault Line). Upper Shake was great quiet campground. Closed now, but where I camped many times w my Dad. Ah, memories..
