M-K Campground is conveniently located at Main Fork Rock Crk Rd, Red Lodge, MT 59068, USA. This address places it within the picturesque Rock Creek drainage, an area renowned for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. For those familiar with the Red Lodge area, reaching M-K Campground is relatively straightforward. The Main Fork Rock Creek Road leads directly to the campground, offering a scenic drive that gradually takes you deeper into the forest. While it is an unpaved forest road, it is generally accessible for a wide range of vehicles, including trucks and cars, though standard precautions for unpaved surfaces should always be observed. The drive itself is part of the experience, showcasing the stunning scenery that surrounds the campground. Furthermore, the road extends beyond M-K Campground, leading to additional camping spots and ultimately to the trailhead for Glacier Lake, offering extended exploration opportunities for those who wish to venture further into the backcountry. The campground's location provides an excellent balance: it feels wonderfully secluded, offering ample privacy and a true wilderness feel, yet it remains within a reasonable drive from Red Lodge, making it an ideal choice for a weekend getaway or a longer stay.

M-K Campground, as a free camping area, provides a set of fundamental services designed to enhance the rustic camping experience. While it doesn't offer amenities like flush toilets or hookups, the services provided are crucial for comfortable and responsible outdoor living:

  • Large Fire Pits: Every campsite at M-K Campground is equipped with a large fire pit, perfect for evening campfires, cooking, and warmth. This essential amenity allows campers to fully enjoy the traditional camping experience.
  • Metal Bear Food Storage Containers (Bear Boxes): Approximately half of the campsites are outfitted with sturdy metal bear food storage containers, commonly known as bear boxes. These are vital for safely securing food and scented items away from wildlife, promoting both camper safety and bear welfare in this known bear country.
  • Huge Picnic Tables: Each site boasts a generously sized picnic table, some large enough to accommodate 12 or more people. These substantial tables provide ample space for meal preparation, dining, and social gatherings.
  • Outhouses (Pit Toilets): M-K Campground provides two outhouses (pit toilets) for public use. While rustic, they offer a designated and more hygienic alternative to "pooping in the woods," as noted by a long-time visitor. Maintenance, as with all pit toilets, can vary, but they serve their fundamental purpose.
  • Designated Parking: Each campsite is designated with parking space for at least two trucks or potentially three cars, ensuring adequate parking for campers and their vehicles without overcrowding the site.

M-K Campground offers several features and highlights that truly set it apart and make it a highly desirable destination for locals seeking an authentic Montana camping experience. These aspects contribute significantly to its charm and popularity:

  • Free Camping: One of the most significant highlights of M-K Campground is that camping here is entirely free. This makes it an incredibly attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and those who appreciate accessible outdoor recreation.
  • Spacious and Private Sites: The campsites at M-K are generally very large and strategically spaced out, providing a high degree of privacy between sites. This ample distance ensures a more secluded and peaceful experience, allowing campers to truly enjoy the quiet of the forest.
  • Proximity to Creek: The campground is located near a creek, offering the soothing sounds of flowing water and potential opportunities for creek-side relaxation or exploration.
  • Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: Visitors have a good chance of seeing local wildlife, particularly deer and moose, especially during the summer months. This adds an exciting element to the camping experience and a chance to connect with Montana's incredible fauna.
  • Access to Trails: The campground is situated with trails nearby, providing easy access for hiking and exploring the surrounding wilderness. The road leading to M-K also continues up to the Glacier Lake Trail, offering more extensive hiking possibilities for those seeking a longer adventure.
  • Bear Country Awareness: While a feature requiring caution, the fact that it is known bear country highlights the true wilderness experience. The provision of bear boxes and the advice to carry bear spray or a firearm for protection underscore the genuine outdoor immersion.
  • Long-Standing Local Favorite: With visitors having frequented the area for 20 years, M-K Campground has a long-standing history as a beloved spot among locals, speaking volumes about its consistent appeal and natural charm.

Absolutely love this area. M-k campground specifically has large fire pits in every spot associated with it and about half of them also have metal bear food storage containers. Most of the sites are pretty large. The site pictured here doesn't have one (bear container). All of them have huge tables. Room for 12 or so. 2 out houses to choose from. Most days it's really not bad. Some days its ROUGH. . . Still beats pooping in the woods I say. Bring bear spray/.40 cal pistol or larger for bear protection. Been going here for 20yrs now have only ever seen 2 bears from miles away but have heard many stories. Parking for 2 trucks or possibly 3 cars designated for each spot. Good chance of seeing deer/moose in the summer. Camping is free. Camp sites are far enough away to provide adequate privacy as well. Additional camping spots all along the road that leads to m-k even up to the top where glacier lake trial is. Some up there but way more bear danger.

Great place that's not too far away. Easy to get too, and you can almost always find a camping spot.
