M&M Point Campground Introduce

M&M Point Campground: Your Primitive and Peaceful Retreat on Cheney Reservoir

For Kansas residents who treasure the simplicity of traditional camping and the beauty of large, open water, M&M Point Campground at Cheney State Park offers a refreshing destination. Situated on the East Shore of the expansive Cheney Reservoir, this campground is primarily known for providing a large number of primitive campsites with unparalleled, front-row views of the lake. It is the ideal spot for tent campers, groups, and self-contained RVers who appreciate a rustic setting over high-end amenities, finding joy in nature's quietude.

M&M Point is a favorite within the huge Cheney State Park complex, which is a major recreational hub in central Kansas for activities like sailing, fishing, and boating. Here, the emphasis is on the unspoiled environment and the vast, open skies, which offer incredible stargazing opportunities away from the bright lights of Wichita, located less than an hour away. The area provides a back-to-basics camping experience, where the main draw is the serenity of the shoreline and the sheer volume of open space. The name, while perhaps misleading, actually refers to the point of land itself, which juts into the reservoir, providing prime lake proximity.

However, visitors to M&M Point must be prepared for a genuine primitive camping experience. Customer reviews indicate that while the location is "all around great," there can be inconsistent upkeep of the sites and facilities. Visitors have noted issues with unmowed grass, general site cleanliness, and the less-than-ideal state of the vault toilets and fire rings. Furthermore, some campers have experienced confusion with the park's signage and maps. This is a place for the prepared and patient camper who values the view and tranquility over perfect park maintenance. Those who can embrace the rugged charm will be rewarded with a memorable, peaceful stay on the water.

Location and Accessibility

M&M Point Campground is located on the East Shore of Cheney State Park, near the community of Mt. Hope, Kansas. The park is easily accessible from major highways, including K-96 and K-17, making it a quick and convenient drive from the Wichita metropolitan area (approximately 30 to 45 minutes). This proximity allows city residents to effortlessly swap urban life for the quiet solitude of the reservoir in a short amount of time.

The specific address is listed generally as Unnamed Road, Mt Hope, KS 67108, USA, directing visitors to the East Shore area of the park. Upon entering the State Park, guests should be attentive and follow the internal park signage specifically pointing to M&M Point, as the vast size of Cheney State Park can make internal navigation tricky, a point highlighted by some past visitors. The campground sits close to other East Shore loops, but is distinct, offering a separated feel. Its location is excellent for access to key boating areas, as it is situated near boat ramps and the main marina facilities.

Services Offered

M&M Point Campground primarily focuses on primitive camping, but it does offer a few key amenities to ensure a reasonable level of comfort, particularly for extended stays:

  • Campsite Options: The campground features approximately 94 primitive campsites. These sites generally do not include electrical or water hookups, though some sources suggest a few utility sites may exist in the area. The main offering is the abundant non-utility space suitable for tents and self-contained RVs.
  • Sanitary Facilities: An ADA-accessible shower house with modern toilets is located within the M&M Point area or very nearby, providing essential facilities for washing and hygiene. Additionally, several basic pit toilets (vault toilets) are dispersed throughout the loop.
  • Potable Water: Potable water hydrants are available within the campground area, ensuring campers can access clean drinking water.
  • Sewage Disposal: While no sewer hookups are available on individual sites, a dump station is located within the broader East Shore area of Cheney State Park, requiring RVers to drive a short distance for proper disposal.
  • Basic Site Amenities: Each camping unit is provided with a picnic table and a fire ring/grill, though users should check their condition upon arrival, as maintenance has been inconsistent according to reviews.
  • Non-Reservable Access: M&M Point sites are often designated as non-reservable (first-come, first-served), which can be an advantage for spontaneous weekend trips, though it can also be a risk during busy periods.

Features / Highlights

The main attraction of M&M Point Campground is its rustic character and unparalleled location on the water:

  • Prime Waterfront Location: The campground offers numerous sites with direct, unobstructed views of Cheney Reservoir, allowing campers immediate access to the shoreline for fishing, relaxing, and enjoying the scenic beauty.
  • Primitive/Rustic Appeal: Ideal for those seeking an authentic, less-developed camping experience. Sites #39 and #40, in particular, are often noted for being more set apart, providing extra solitude.
  • Boating and Water Sports Access: The proximity to the East Shore boat ramps and the main marina facilities makes this an excellent basecamp for any watercraft owner, from sailboaters (Cheney is one of the top sailing lakes) to power boaters.
  • Stargazing: Located far enough from major city lights, the area is highly recommended for stargazing, giving Kansas campers a magnificent view of the unpolluted night sky.
  • Fishing: Excellent opportunities for shoreline and boat fishing are available, with the reservoir known for walleye, crappie, and white bass.
  • Pet Friendly: Like most areas of the state park, pets are allowed, ensuring the whole family can enjoy the outdoor escape (standard leash and waste disposal rules apply).

What is Worth Choosing M&M Point Campground

M&M Point Campground is uniquely worth choosing for Kansas campers, especially those near the Wichita area, who do not require full hookups and prioritize a quiet, primitive, and highly scenic waterfront setting. Its key value proposition is its large capacity for non-reservable camping, making it a viable option for last-minute trips, and its unbeatable location right on the shores of Cheney Reservoir. The campground provides a true escape from the bustle, offering solitude and stunning views.

However, it is vital to acknowledge the trade-off: campers must be self-sufficient and prepared for the potential need for some "elbow grease" due to variable facility upkeep, particularly the pit toilets and site maintenance. If your ideal Kansas getaway involves the simple pleasures of tent camping or self-contained RVing, the stunning lake views, excellent water access, and the chance to witness billion-star night skies will make M&M Point an unforgettable, truly natural experience.

Nice campground with great views. You can explore the island when the lake is low. We built a snowman out on the island.

Cheney is a wonderful lake with so many camping grounds. They do a good job at keeping the place clean even after hordes of worthless people trash the place over the holiday seasons.
