Nestled in the heart of Midpines, California, McCabe Flat Campground offers a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts and campers seeking a serene escape near Yosemite National Park. Situated along the picturesque Merced River, this primitive campsite is perfect for those who appreciate the beauty of the great outdoors.
McCabe Flat Campground features clean pit toilets and well-maintained sites, ensuring a comfortable camping experience. The campground operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, with approximately 10-15 sites available. Rates are affordable at $10 per site, or just $5 with a national access pass, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.
The campground is known for its peaceful and dark environment, providing an ideal setting for stargazing and relaxation. However, visitors should be prepared for a short walk from the parking lot to their campsite, which takes about 30 seconds each way. Additionally, while the site is well-maintained, some campers have noted the presence of wasps, even in October.

Primitive campsite with very clean put toilets. Right along the Merced River. Super pretty. Was $10 a site, $5 with national access pass. Quietest and darkest place to camp outside Yosemite.
First come first serve, many sites (about 10-15?) $10. Really love the site. It's gorgeous, well maintained with many amenities, and like the almost city like planning of the campsite. Docked a point because there's SO MANY WASPS even in October, and the trip to the parking lot to your site is around 30 seconds per way. Btw, there aren't many camp sites near here, so plan ahead.
Great place to stop on way to Yosemite. Only $10 per night. I spent December 23, 2023 there.
Very quiet and off road campground. Primitive with only two restrooms and no water. However, the river flowing through the campground is very clean and warm, great for a swim. Works as first come first serve. We paid $10 per night. It’s quite close to the Yosemite National Park entrance.
Been enjoying this part of the Merced river since the early 80s Great for exploring hiking fishing panning gold swimming Family gatherings
