Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For Montana locals who believe that the best camping requires effort and rewards with solitude, **Medicine Creek Campground** offers a truly authentic backcountry experience. This destination is not your typical drive-up RV park; it is a primitive, highly secluded tent camping area located within the breathtaking **Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA)**, a vast, wild landscape that straddles the Montana-Wyoming border. This area is defined by the towering, 1,000-foot limestone and sandstone cliffs that plunge dramatically into the waters of Bighorn Lake.
Medicine Creek Campground is known for its **unmatched natural beauty** and its demanding **accessibility**. It is exclusively a **boat-in or hike-in** location, a fact that preserves its remote character and guarantees a quiet, untamed wilderness experience that few other campgrounds can match. The journey to the site is part of the adventure, serving as a natural filter that ensures only the most dedicated Montana adventurers—backpackers, paddlers, and boaters—reach its pristine shores.
With only **six primitive campsites** available, Medicine Creek is where modern life fades away. There is no cell service, no electricity, and no running water, forcing visitors to fully embrace the **"leave no trace"** ethic and self-sufficiency. As one excited visitor noted, the area is **"So absolutely beautiful!"** The reward for the challenging access is an intimate connection with the Bighorn Canyon, providing spectacular lake views and a serene base camp for exploring one of Montana's most unique geological formations.

Medicine Creek Campground is an official **waterway campground** within the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA), a federal park. While the campground itself is geographically positioned closer to the Wyoming side of Bighorn Lake (approximately three miles north of Barry's Landing), it is a vital recreational feature for all Montanans utilizing the lake and the northern district of BICA near Fort Smith, Montana. The vast Bighorn Lake connects the two states, making this campsite an accessible prize for boaters traveling the entire length of the canyon.
The primary access points for Bighorn Canyon NRA in Montana are typically via Billings or Hardin, then south to Fort Smith. However, to reach the campground itself, vehicles are not an option:
This extreme level of accessibility, or lack thereof, means Medicine Creek is primarily a summer and fall destination for Montanans with the necessary equipment—a boat, kayak, or full backpacking gear—and experience in remote, potentially challenging terrain. The distance from Montana's population centers further ensures that only those dedicated to the backcountry experience make the journey.

Medicine Creek Campground is defined by its **primitive status**, meaning the services are minimal and intended to provide a designated space for camping, not a developed resort experience. Campers must practice maximum self-sufficiency, but the National Park Service (NPS) does provide core necessities:

Keeping this review short and sweet because we simply could not make it out there with a car. See pictures of the road google maps sent us down. You could park and take a 2.6 mile walk down to the recreation area. We are thinking you could take a boat down the canyon to get here as well!
So absolutely beautiful!
