A large group of unfriendly, very belligerently drunken men were camping right next to us at Merman campgrounds this weekend. They blared obnoxious music through a speaker until about 2 a.m. while drinking and screaming obscenities even farther into the night. There were no rangers or anyone at the campgrounds to ask for help at all. We barely slept all night. The next morning we were finally able to get in touch with the supervisors of the campground but the group was only asked to keep it down, not told to leave. We couldn't stand another night of being stressed and sleepless so we left. I find it pretty unfair that we were being quiet and respectful to others yet we had to be the ones to leave the site we had paid for because people who were being extremely disrespectful to everyone there were allowed to stay. Their dog was not on a leash, they were chasing the local wildlife, drinking and partying all night and picking loud fights with each other right by our tent area. They disturbed us and everyone else in the area way past the posted quiet hours. We felt beyond uncomfortable to the point of not knowing if we were safe. Needless to say, we will not be back. Very disappointing.
Super nice park and campground. Beautiful this time of year, big sites and a lot of open areas for kids, dogs and you are not cramped at all! Cool cave and hiking! Didn't use the bathrooms as we were self contained so not sure how they were.
We stayed here from Thursday- Monday. Our campsite was an electric and we had a water faucet right by our campsite. We were able to set up 2 decent size tents. Our campsite was very shady during the daytime with an occasional burst of sunlight in the heat of the day. The shower house was close by, so it wasn't too bad to walk to the Shower house. I wish the Shower House had a family shower option. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and was kept in shape throughout the day. The shower side has an automatic light that kept going off when no one was in there. The park was very nice and huge. We saw a lot of wildlife in the park. There are trails that you can hike. There are 3 caves you can hike to through the trails. Fisher Cave unfortunately was closed due to bat hibernation for the winter. So, if you are wanting to go to Fisher Cave make sure to do it anywhere from May- September. It does cost to enter the tour, but I am unsure of how much. We swam in the river it wasn't flooded at all. The weather was very nice. It's a drive from the campsites to the river access. There are trail paths you can take but they are man-made. so be careful on them. The hiking trails are pretty decent. Some of the trails have amazing views. The bugs aren't so bad just make sure you spray down ahead of time. There are seed ticks to watch out for. Sullivan is the town closest to the campground/ State park. It's 4 miles driving to the town. They have a Walmart, Cracker Barrell, Starbucks, Schnucks, Lowes, Ace Hardware, Denny's, its about 30 minutes from Meramec Caverns.
I have camped here for years, one of my favorite Missouri spots to camp. Well used to be. The showers in shower house 1 were atrocious! Green mold on floor and walls, drain cover obscured from sight with so much hair and debris. I used to tell people about how amazing this little slice of heaven was, the way it is now is pretty unexcusable. Whoever the campground hosts should take care of the property properly. It is prone to flooding, that is beyond anyone's control. The rest of the place though definitely needs a deep clean and some TLC. Campsites are large and spacious but the place fills up on weekends. Neighbors always have been respectful. It's usually a ghost town Monday afternoon. Several water spigots and multiple running water facilities also a few latrines.
Very pretty area. The campground hosts were great. This campground had nice facilities and plenty of access to the water.
