Mexicano 2 is not your average campground. It's an experience designed for those who appreciate true wilderness and are equipped for a genuine off-road expedition. Imagine a campsite surrounded by ancient hills and towering ridges, where the only sounds you hear are the gentle whispers of the desert wind and the occasional hoot of an owl. This is the promise of Mexicano 2 – a place where you can disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature in its purest form.

The allure of Mexicano 2 lies in its profound solitude. Unlike many popular campgrounds that can feel crowded, Mexicano 2 offers unparalleled privacy. You won't see or hear other campers, ensuring a remarkably peaceful and personal experience. This sense of remoteness is a key feature, making it a perfect sanctuary for contemplation, stargazing, and simply enjoying the vastness of the Texas sky.

For those passionate about astronomy or simply mesmerized by the night sky, Mexicano 2 is a dream come true. With minimal to no light pollution, the views of the stars are absolutely spectacular. On a clear night, you’ll witness a celestial display so vivid and expansive, it will undoubtedly leave you in awe. It's an opportunity to see the Milky Way stretch across the heavens, a sight that many urban dwellers rarely experience.

However, it's crucial to understand that access to Mexicano 2 is an adventure in itself, requiring specific vehicle capabilities and careful planning. This isn't a campground accessible by standard passenger cars. The journey to Mexicano 2 is part of its charm and challenge, ensuring that those who make it truly appreciate the solitude it offers.

Location and Accessibility

Mexicano 2 is situated deep within Big Bend Ranch State Park, near Redford, TX 79846, USA. This location places it in one of the most remote and stunning regions of West Texas, offering a truly immersive desert experience. However, its secluded nature means accessibility is a significant factor to consider before planning your trip.

To reach Mexicano 2, you absolutely must have a high-clearance, four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle. This is not a suggestion; it's a necessity. The roads leading to the campsite are unpaved, extremely rocky, uneven, and include challenging inclines. One particular stretch involves a rough 17% grade and a blind climb, which can be daunting for even experienced off-roaders. Vehicles with lower clearance will undoubtedly bottom out and risk damage.

It's highly recommended to have heavy-duty off-road tires on your vehicle, and a good spare tire is essential. The rugged terrain can be unforgiving, and a flat tire in such a remote location would be a significant setback. Furthermore, be prepared for a slow journey. You should anticipate driving no more than 5 MPH on these roads, meaning the hour-long travel time to the campsite is a conservative estimate. Patience and careful driving are paramount.

Another important consideration for vehicle owners is the presence of thorny shrubs along the road. If you're concerned about your vehicle's paint, be aware that it's highly likely to encounter some scratching from the vegetation. This is part of the wild and untamed nature of Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Fuel is not available within Big Bend Ranch State Park. It is strongly advised to top off your fuel tank in Presidio before heading into the park to ensure you have more than enough to cover your travel to and from Mexicano 2, as well as any exploration you plan to do within the vast park.

Services Offered

Mexicano 2 offers a minimalist camping experience, designed to complement the natural surroundings rather than provide extensive amenities. The services available are focused on providing a comfortable base for your wilderness adventure:

  • A large picnic table: Perfect for meal preparation, dining, and enjoying the desert views.
  • A fire pit: Ideal for cozy campfires under the starry sky (check for burn bans before lighting a fire).
  • Ample tent pad space: Generous areas suitable for setting up multiple tents, accommodating groups or providing extra space for solo campers.

It is important to note what Mexicano 2 does not offer, as this informs proper preparation. There are no food lockers, so all food should be stored securely in your vehicle to prevent attracting local wildlife. Additionally, there are no park bathrooms anywhere near this campsite. The closest park bathroom is a significant drive away (potentially an hour due to road conditions), so bringing a portable camp toilet is highly recommended for your convenience and to adhere to Leave No Trace principles.

The true appeal of Mexicano 2 lies in its distinctive features and highlights, which set it apart from typical camping destinations:

This is a review of the Mexican 2 campsite at Big Bend Ranch State Park. I stayed at this campground in late December. I selected this campground for the quiet and solitude. The campsite is surrounded by hills and ridges, is remote, very quiet, and peaceful. There are no other campsites near enough to this site that you will see or hear neighbors. During my stay, I heard nothing at night until an owl started hooting around dawn. There is also little if any light pollution visible from this campsite, so on a clear night there is a wide and beautiful view of the bright stars in the sky. The campsite has a large picnic table, a fire pit and ample tent pad space for multiple tents. There is no locker for your food, so you will probably want to keep all food in your vehicle so animals don't come searching for it in the night. There is no park bathroom anywhere close to this campsite and the drive to the nearest park bathroom will probably take an hour due to the roughness of the road; so you should bring a camp-toilet with you. To get to this campsite, you must travel roads designated for high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles. And you will not make it to this campsite without such a vehicle. The road out to the campsite is very rocky and uneven and involves some rocky climbs, including a blind climb up a rough 17% grade. I have a 4WD Toyota Tacoma with off-road tires and to ascend these parts I had to put it in 4-low and go for it. I made it without issue, but a lower clearance vehicle would have bottomed out. You probably want heavy duty off-road tires and you should have a good spare. Allow at least an hour to navigate the rough 4WD road out to the campsite as you probably won't exceed 5MPH. And if you care about your vehicle's paint, there will be plenty of thorny shrubs to rub your vehicle on the way to and from this campsite. There is no fuel available in the park, so I suggest topping off the tank in Presidio before heading into the park. In summary, this is a beautifully secluded campsite that provides peaceful desert solitude and a breathtaking view of the night sky and if you don't mind the 4WD adventure getting to it, I highly recommend it.
