- Location: The campground is conveniently located near restaurants and the Indiana Dunes National Park.
- Staff Interactions: Some customers have reported negative experiences with staff, citing rudeness and a lack of customer service. Late fees have also been a reported issue.
- Permanent Campers: The campground has a significant number of permanent campers.
Michigan City Campground offers a range of accommodations, including campsites and cabins, and provides access to various amenities. Customer Reviews
Place is nice & well maintained. Staff is petty and rude! Checked out and loaded up our camper, pulled to the dump station and dumped. Then pulled out of the way by the pond to get lunch out and eat before we hit the road. Staff approached us while eating and said we had to pay a late fee for still being on the property. Please don’t employ kids who have zero customer service experience to run an adult business. People bring their families to your campground and want to feel safe, appreciated and welcome. The young adults in the office provide absolutely nothing of that sort.
We stayed here for 5 nights in a campsite. We also had a cabin (cottage 10)for 3 nights. The campsite was spacious (site 210) and backed up to a farmers field. I would bring an extra waste hose so you can back your camper further back into your spot. We were in the front section of the campground, which is near the road, so it was noisier than what I like. There are not a lot of big trees either. The cabin said it sleeps 6, but the other 4 people have to sleep upstairs in a loft. There is no way to stand upstairs and the mattresses are not for 2 adult people. The bathroom would smell like sulfur when you showered. They had to keep the bathroom door closed at all times so it didn't smell the whole cabin. The campground itself is well maintained and the bathrooms are clean. There are a lot of permanent campers at the campground. The pool looked nice. There is a small dog park and fishing pond. It is gated, which is nice since it's so close to the highway. Close to many restaurants and the Indiana Dunes.
I'm writing a detailed review because we looked for more info ourselves and hoping this helps someone. We stayed for 3 days last week. We had Cabin 3, a basic cabin with a few perks. No sink, but a spigot outside. Let's start with the Pros: -Location is great. Close to the dunes, fuel, stores, and restaurants. -The camp grounds are nice and maintained. We didn't get to swim in the pool, but it looked great. The playground and basketball courts are nice. The store onsite is helpful. The fire ring and outside the cabin are nice. The fridge, microwave, and AC in the cabin all work great. -Laundry is nice Now the cons: -The biggest thing is the BUGS inside the cabin. In between the logs are tons and tons of dead bugs. Anytime you brush against anything, shells fall off and on you. Our kids were constantly having dead bugs in their beds. Hard to explain to little ones and not have them freak out. We also had live spiders everywhere in the cabin. We kept sweeping and they kept coming. -The twin beds are not full twins. They are in length, but not in width, so it's snug. -There is a fire ring, but no grate. We had to purchase one. -As others have said, the showers are old, which isn't terrible, but the sulfur/metal taste and smell in the water is strong. You can smell it on your skin after a shower and taste it when you brush your teeth. -The game room is nice, but expensive. We wish more of the games, like ping pong, were free. -There is no real place to wash dishes. There is a sink in the store, but when we asked to use it, we were told "you can wash a few things, but shouldn't use it much." Most places have a communal sink. -Customer service isn't great. The owner is short and snippy. With the exception of the nice lady who lives upstairs, everyone seems to be annoyed that we were there. -On the last day, we asked if we could turn in the key 5 min late so my partner could grab a super quick shower. We were told they would have to charge us extra. I get being over, but it was literally 5 min. Overall, location is good, grounds are good, cabins need improvement. Not sure I would stay again.
Michigan City campground is an awesome place! We spent summer 2020 here. I was a travel nurse working in Gary, IN. This campground is a nice quiet, peaceful place that is definitely great for families. It's been 4 years since we've been there and my kids still talk about fishing in their pond! We love yall! 💜
Overall a good location relative to Indiana Dunes National Park and the grounds were well maintained. However most of the staff was not very courteous and generally seemed unhappy (there were a couple of friendlier employees though). We rented a camping cottage and adjacent RV site for our camper. The cottage was newly refurbished and very nice but the tap water smelled like rotten eggs which caused the cottage to smell awful. I asked the staff about this was told that’s the way it is and some of the staff don’t like chlorinated water you find in other cities. I’m not really concerned about their water taste preferences so their excuse was less than helpful. We bought bottled water and had filters on our camper. The filters addressed the issue. All this told me was management doesn’t want to spend money on inline filters for their water system. My other issue is with how close the sites are together. Our RV site shared a cement pad with the adjacent site. This cement pad had 2 picnic tables and 2 fire rings. I have no desire to share a space like that with other campers (sorry to my fellow campers).
We travel extensively as part of our jobs and are frequent return- visitors at a lot of campsites, but this one won't be on our "Oh we really must stay here again" list. Well, the staff we dealt with were right on par with Basil Fawlty. The instructions and stay contract seem like they were written by a failed drill sergeant rather than by someone who knows how to communicate in a friendly, efficient manner. The site itself was ok, we picked it as a convenient location along the way rather than because we wanted to be near any of the local attractions. The showers had nowhere to hang anything or put anything down, and no privacy door, just a curtain. The actual shower itself was clean and had hot water, but it was super inconvenient.
One of the best campgrounds we ever have stayed at. Excellent staff, quiet, friendly group of campers. Store is awesome and great prices. Has a great laundry room. Pool area very clean. We happened to stay on the one weekend a year that they serve an awesome free breakfast! I cannot say enough good things about this place. We definitely will be back! We had a great start to our trip thanks to these folks!
