We enjoyed how close the river was to our campsite. You can hear the traffic on the road, but that did not deter us from having a nice time.
Simple spot to camp along the river, right off the road. It is well kept and the spots are easy to find and are large (you could navigate a pretty big rig here easily). Be prepared for no privacy between sites, no trees at your site, and some road noise. But, it's easy to get to and convenient to many other attractions. We enjoyed our ~12 hour overnight stay, but if we were going to be spending a lot of time at the site we would have looked for another campground. An employee was out by 9am marking campsites as either reserved or available for the next night.
We camped at site #4 While my husband was fishing by the campground I enjoyed reading a book underneath the pine tree that is right on the river. No mosquitoes. A good base for exploring around. We did the lava lake hike that is nearby and explored the Hyalite lake region the next day. Each site has a bare safe containers. Because it is a flat open campground it was easy to talk to other campers and make friends... Yes, there is some traffic noise but it wasn't a concern for us. The pictures are from the road over the campground.
Very well maintained USFS campground. During the day the vehicle traffic is busy on the 191Fwy. However, the campground is located on the river.
Place was awesome, right by a sweet trailhead too, minutes from Big Sky.
