Moose Lake Campground Introduce
For us Minnesotans, the allure of the Northwoods is a timeless call – an invitation to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in the serene beauty of forests and lakes. While our state offers a vast array of campgrounds, some gems stand out precisely because of their simplicity and quiet charm. Moose Lake Campground, nestled near Deer River, MN, is one such place. This small, out-of-the-way campground is designed for those who appreciate a rustic experience, where the focus is on the natural environment rather than extensive amenities. If you're a local seeking a peaceful retreat, an affordable overnight stop, or a quiet base for fishing adventures, Moose Lake Campground offers a genuine taste of Minnesota's tranquil wilderness.
Minnesota's camping landscape is incredibly diverse, from bustling state parks to remote backcountry sites. Moose Lake Campground falls into the latter category, offering a "tiny out of the way campground" experience, as one visitor described it. This focus on simplicity means "No services, just a biffy," making it ideal for self-sufficient campers. The intimate size, with "12 small car camp sites," and the affordable price point (noted as "$17 a night in 2024") make it a fantastic option for budget-conscious travelers, including "motorcycle camper" looking for a safe and quiet spot. Past visitors consistently highlight its cleanliness and peaceful atmosphere, especially during certain times of the year: "This time of year is nice and quiet. Campground is clean." While there might be "a bit of road noise," it's generally deemed "not objectionable," allowing the sounds of nature to prevail. This blend of affordability, cleanliness, and tranquility makes Moose Lake Campground a cherished spot for those who truly appreciate rustic Minnesota camping.
Moose Lake Campground is located near Deer River, MN 56636, USA. This places it in Itasca County, deep within the heart of Minnesota's famed Northwoods region. Deer River is a charming small town that serves as a gateway to countless lakes, forests, and outdoor recreational opportunities. The area is characterized by its dense pine and hardwood forests, numerous lakes, and abundant wildlife, offering the quintessential northern Minnesota experience.
Accessibility to Moose Lake Campground is generally by vehicle, although its "out of the way" nature suggests it might be located on less-traveled roads, possibly gravel. As noted by a reviewer, it's suitable for "car camp sites" and "motorcycle camper," implying that standard vehicles should have no issues reaching it. However, given its "tiny" size and lack of services, it is likely not designed for large RVs or pull-type campers requiring extensive maneuverability or hookups. The reviewer's experience of being "the only one here on a Friday night in May" further emphasizes its secluded and quiet nature, particularly during the shoulder seasons. While a specific physical street address for GPS may lead directly to the site, its remote character means visitors should be prepared for limited cell service in some areas of the Northwoods. Overall, it's accessible for those seeking a rustic, peaceful retreat without requiring a highly developed road infrastructure.
Moose Lake Campground is a rustic, no-frills camping experience, specifically designed for those who enjoy self-sufficiency and minimal amenities. Based on customer reviews, the services offered are quite basic:
- Campsites: Approximately "12 small car camp sites" are available. These are suitable for tents, small trailers, and motorcycle campers.
- Biffy (Vault Toilet): The only provided service mentioned is a "biffy," which refers to a basic vault toilet or pit toilet. This provides essential restroom facilities without running water.
- No Services: Explicitly stated as having "No services," meaning campers should not expect electricity, potable running water, dump stations, or showers.
- Cleanliness: Despite being rustic, the campground is noted as "clean" by visitors, indicating that the basic facilities are well-maintained.
- Affordable Rate: The cost was "$17 a night in 2024," making it a budget-friendly option for campers.

- Picnic Tables: Often found at individual campsites in such settings, for convenience.
- "Pack It In, Pack It Out": Due to the lack of services, campers are expected to carry out all their trash and waste, leaving no trace.
- First-Come, First-Served: Given its "out of the way" and quiet nature, it's likely a first-come, first-served campground, meaning no reservations are taken.
Campers visiting Moose Lake Campground should be prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing all necessary water, cooking supplies, and other provisions. The charm of this campground lies in its simplicity and focus on natural immersion.

Tiny out of the way campground. No services, just a biffy. 12 small car camp sites, $17 a night in 2024. I was the only one here on a Friday night in May. Worked great for a motorcycle camper. A bit of road noise but not objectionable. Would stop by again.
We stay here to fish. This time of year is nice and quiet. Campground is clean.
Nice campground on a beautiful lake. Usually not too busy. It's well kept. Good campsites. Great beach. Nice boa5 landing except its real shallow (not good for big boats).
Very nice secluded little area.. Beautiful in the fall... No showers or electric hook up which kinda sucks but hey thats what camping is all about... Definitely a place to visit...
Campground is fine. Nothing fancy. June 2020 price is $14 per night. First come first serve with about 12 spaces. Biffys, vault toilets (closed for now), fire rings, picnic tables at each site. Had a 32’ fifth wheel, boat and truck. Only a few spots had enough space for that. Lots of tent campers. Terrible mosquitos. Boat launch is next to campground and very shallow but there is a small sand beach. It’s about 6 feet from water to woods. Also not fancy but could work. No electricity or running water.
