🌲 Introduction / Overview: Experience True Northwoods Island Camping
For Minnesotans seeking an authentic and highly-rated wilderness experience, the island campsites within Voyageurs National Park offer an unparalleled escape. Among these treasures, Moxie Island, specifically site K22 on Lake Kabetogama, stands out as a local favorite. This is not a drive-up campground; it is a true boat-in destination, immersing you fully in the beauty of the Northwoods.
Moxie Island is renowned for providing a classic VNP camping experience—serene, spacious, and directly on the water. Unlike some remote sites, it offers a perfect balance of wilderness isolation with convenient access to park resources. Visitors consistently describe it as their "favorite" site after years of exploring the park, praising its open layout, fantastic swimming beach, and the peaceful separation from day-use areas.
As a front-country campsite in the park, all stays require a boat for access and an overnight permit reservation through the National Park Service system. This requirement ensures that the pristine nature of the site is maintained for the next group of Minnesota adventurers.

📍 Location and Accessibility: A Highly Accessible Island Gem
Moxie Island is situated on Kabetogama Lake, near the Kabetogama gateway community in Northern Minnesota. The official park address associated with this area is Kabetogama, MN 56669, USA.
Its accessibility makes it a premier choice for those launching from the mainland. The island is located only about 2.8 miles from the Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center Boat Launch. This short distance is ideal for an easy boat ride, making it simple to check in, obtain your permit, or quickly access park resources and local resorts for supplies if needed.
Access is strictly boat-in (or "water-accessible"), which is standard for all front-country campsites in Voyageurs National Park. This requires securing transportation, whether by private motorboat, canoe, kayak, or local water taxi service. Once at the island, the campsite is designed for easy shoreline access, featuring a sandy beach that is perfect for landing and securing your watercraft.

Loved this campsite. It’s very open and spacious, has a sandy beach perfect for landing a boat and swimming, and it’s pretty close to the kabetogama visitors center. Some great trees for hammocks and a good breeze to keep the bugs away. I’ve been coming to VNP for six years now and had a different site each time… this is probably my favorite!
The camping site has a sand beach, is not too buggy, has lovey sunrises, a pit toilet, 2 tent pads, and 2 bear lockers. Wonderful campsite! The day use site is just slightly north on the island, but it’s far enough away to not see or hear anyone. Altogether a great stay!
Got this epic view while camping on the island over the summer solstice.
