MSRV is a beautiful campground with spectacular views of the canyon, especially if you camp behind the office up the hill. The grounds and laundry and bathrooms/showers are always very clean. There are many trails for some short hikes as well. However, if wifi and cell reception is important on a daily basis, you MUST request a site near the office. We were camped next to my brother who camped with us in his fifth wheel behind the office. The wifi was sketchy, at best. When I asked the manager about it he said they were expecting receivers/extenders in the mail any day now which they were going to install. Over a week later still no extenders. My hubby had to load up his laptop, pad, phone and go to the office every morning to work for a few hours. Not difficult, but definitely an inconvenience. When asked the manager about the extenders we were just told, "well, get Starlink" as this is what they have. So, ok, we have never really had any problems with wifi in the past 5 years as we have a hotspot for the rv, so NO, we're not going to just get Starlink now. No concern whatsoever and what happened to the extenders/receivers? As mentioned, the campground is beautiful with a great location 15-20 minutes from Salida. However, if wifi is important or needed for work, either request a site close to the office or "just get Starlink"😉
We really enjoyed our stay here; Scott and April (owners) were friendly, helpful, and made us feel welcome. We rented one of their on-site traveler trailers and were impressed with the cleanliness, convience/features, and overall coziness. We did have a little issue with the thermostat (but Scott addressed it immediately (turned out to be a simple fix once the system was reset). The showers/reatroom/laundry facilty is directly across from where we were staying ( maybe 30 ft away); the facility was clean and tidy. Very nice to be situated so close. Additionally our fellow campers were respectful and quiet. We needed to unwind and our stay here was exactly what we needed. Beautiful surroundings! We'll be coming back to Monarch Spur...hopefully soon😎
The new owners have been making improvements, and this RV Park is worth checking out. The spaces themselves are not the highlight. As RV parks go, the spaces have average distance between them (i.e., they are generally close together) and they are on gravel. (The upper spots looked nicer to me and some have views.) They do come with nice picnic tables and firepits with adjustable grills so you can cook on them. What sets this park apart is its location, the walks you can take on the property, and the amenities. The park is above 8000’ so it remains cool during even the hottest part of the summer. From your site, you can easily walk to a nice pond and enjoy wildlife or fishing. (We saw a deer on our way to the pond). The South Arkansas River (more of a creek at this point) runs next to the Park, and if you know anyone who enjoys tent camping there are great spots by the creek and a very nice dry camping RV spot. Amenities include two outdoor grills in an outdoor dining area, a large group firepit area, basketball hoop and other toys for kids, laundry, and a large dog run which is large enough for your dog to actually run and play. There is also a jungle gym for kids or adults who like monkey bars for exercise. There are also a few rental cabins, and a path by the cabins that climbs steadily for 1.5 miles to an old pit mine. A great way to get some cardio exercise in the morning and enjoy a hike. All in all, several very nice walks/short hikes that you can enjoy right outside your RV. Nearby Salida is also a great little town with a nice downtown for walking. Lots of river rafting options too. Also make the trip up the summit past Monarch and take the gondola to over 12,000 feet for breathtaking views of the area. All in all, a very nice place to spend several days. We stayed in August 2024 in a 31’ fifth wheel.
Called last minute and April had a site available. Place is nice and secluded even though it's right off 50 but the creek drowns the hwy noise pretty well. This place is awesome. Owners are super friendly and accommodating. Had wifi, fire pits, picnic tables, showers and full hookups. This was our 1st time at a full hookup park and we'll be coming back soon. Daughter loved the playground, games, basketball, hockey horseshoes and exploring the creek that runs along the property. They rent golf carts to cruise the property in and you can take them to the pond to fish.
Had a great 4 day stay and felt like the staff went above and beyond even helping to jump my car after the battery died. The kids loved renting a golf cart to zip around in and playing with all the lawn games, the playground, and scooters. Gift shop had all the essentials and free otter pops for the kids. Showers were free and even the porta potties smelled good! 😆 We already booked another stay before the season ends!
