Nail Track OHV Play Area Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Californians with a passion for off-highway vehicle (OHV) adventures and a love for secluded, natural camping, Nail Track OHV Play Area offers a truly distinctive experience. Located near Elk Creek, in the heart of the vast Mendocino National Forest, this site is more than just a place to ride; it's a blend of thrilling trails and peaceful camping opportunities. While not a traditional developed campground with numerous amenities, its appeal lies in its raw, untamed nature, catering specifically to those who seek an authentic outdoor escape with their OHVs.

What makes Nail Track particularly intriguing for local users is its unique history. According to accounts from long-time Forest Service personnel, this area was once the site of a camp that existed between approximately 1933 and 1942, before it reportedly burned down. This historical footprint, evidenced by the scattered nails in the ground that give the area its evocative name, adds a layer of depth to your visit, connecting your outdoor recreation with a piece of California's past. Whether you're a seasoned off-roader looking for challenging trails or a camper seeking a quiet spot away from the crowds, Nail Track OHV Play Area provides a compelling destination in Northern California.

Location and Accessibility

Nail Track OHV Play Area is situated near Elk Creek, California, with the general address being Elk Creek, CA 95939, USA. Its location within the extensive Mendocino National Forest means it offers a sense of remote wilderness while still being accessible to Californians from various parts of the state. The specific area is known as the Grindstone Ranger District of the Mendocino National Forest.

To reach Nail Track OHV Play Area, travelers will typically navigate through rural roads leading into the Mendocino National Forest. From major population centers in California, this would involve taking highways such as I-5 to reach Willows or Orland, and then heading west towards Elk Creek. From Elk Creek, specific forest service roads lead to the OHV play area. It's crucial for visitors to have detailed maps or GPS with forest road information, as cell service can be spotty in remote forest areas. Access to the play area itself is generally considered to be "just off the paved road" in some sections, making it relatively easy to find once within the forest road system. However, being within an OHV play area, expect unpaved and potentially challenging roads within the designated riding zones. The travel time will vary significantly depending on your starting point in California, but its location makes it a feasible weekend trip for many Northern and Central Californians.

Retired FS guy who started on this Forest in 1981 told me this is the site of a camp that was built around 1933-1942. I think he said it burned down. He said there are nails in the ground.
