It's a place where the wild beauty of the forest meets the calming presence of the Neuse River, providing a rustic yet rewarding outdoor escape.
The Neuse River Recreation Area, often referred to by locals simply as Flanners Beach due to its prominent beach access (historically), embodies a resilient spirit. Despite the indefinite closure of the beach itself, the small campground within the area remains a functional and pleasant option for campers. Visitors consistently highlight the warm hospitality of the host family, who are described as "very nice and helpful." This personal touch significantly contributes to the welcoming atmosphere, making campers feel right at home in the natural surroundings. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who maintain these public lands, ensuring that North Carolinians still have access to valuable recreational spaces.

Customer Reviews
This is Flanners beach. There's no Neuse or Croatan National park. Or access They're all one place. It needs to be repaired like Fisher's landing has been closed since 2019 yet it's beautiful. Why? People want to come. Fix it and they will.
The beach is closed indefinitely due to hurricane damage, but it is still a pleasant picnic area. There is a small campground there that is small but nice. The host family is very nice and helpful. Many of the sites are quite small, and many don't have electric hookups. There are no water or sewer hookups, but they have potable water faucets and a dump station. Very clean bath house.
This is a quiet place with a nice hiking / biking trail. It was fun to find turtles on the trail!
Unfortunately, the beach access in the parking lot is closed as of July 2024, still, but the woodland paths do have access to the beach. The sign says where the fencing is installed is off limits. We like walking the trails and by the waters edge.
Going on 5 years since Florence and nothing has been done to repair the beach access. The picnic area and the bathrooms are maintained and clean. Nice views of the river under some big pines.
