Nilan Reservoir Campground Introduce

šŸžļø Introduction / Overview

For Montana locals seeking a picturesque and accessible lakeside camping experience with the magnificent backdrop of the Rocky Mountain Front, the Nilan Reservoir Campground is an established favorite. Operated as a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Fishing Access Site (FAS), this location perfectly blends convenience with true Big Sky Country scenery. Situated a short drive from the historic 'cow town' of Augusta, this destination is built around the 520-acre Nilan Reservoir, making water-based activities its primary draw.

Nilan Reservoir Campground is known for its awesome views, as one reviewer noted, offering expansive vistas across the water to the mountains. It caters primarily to self-sufficient campers—both tent campers and RVs—who appreciate basic amenities and the first-come, first-served simplicity of FAS sites. It is open year-round, although services and accessibility may fluctuate with the seasons and weather conditions.

Crucially, as a public FAS, the site maintains a rustic, primitive feel, ensuring a low-impact and authentic outdoor experience. While visitors should be prepared for exposure to the elements—a common characteristic of open reservoir sites—the opportunity to camp right next to the water, often for a lower fee with a Montana fishing license, makes it an excellent value for local recreation.

šŸ“ Location and Accessibility

The Nilan Reservoir Campground is located approximately 7 to 10 miles west of Augusta, Montana, accessible via Benchmark Road. The official address is 7140 Benchmark Rd, Augusta, MT 59410, USA. This location places it strategically in Central Montana, on the eastern edge of the vast Rocky Mountain Front.

Access to the campground is gained via a county road, which may be unpaved in sections but is generally manageable for standard vehicles and most RVs. The site is a popular overnight stop for Montanans traveling through the region or those looking to spend a few days fishing the reservoir. Its proximity to Augusta provides a convenient last stop for gas, supplies, and local dining before settling into the campground.

The reservoir's location means it is part of the scenic area near the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest and the gateway to the popular Benchmark area, known for its extensive network of trails and access to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. While not immediately adjacent to Glacier National Park, it serves as a wonderful, quiet base for travelers approaching the park's eastern side from the south.

I give it 4.5 stars only because camp sites don't include wind shelters. The view is awesome.
