North Egge Lake Camp Introduce

🌲 Introduction / Overview

For Minnesota outdoor enthusiasts seeking a true escape into the North Woods, the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is an iconic destination. Tucked away along this rugged footpath is North Egge Lake Camp, a perfect example of the secluded, rustic experience that defines SHT backpacking. Located in the wilderness near the community of Finland, MN, this site offers a tranquil, hike-in camping opportunity for backpackers moving along the trail or those taking a challenging day hike loop from a nearby trailhead.

North Egge Lake Camp is a designated backcountry campsite managed by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA). It is designed to be a simple, shared resource for hikers, offering basic amenities necessary for an overnight stay while maintaining a low-impact presence in the natural environment. Unlike drive-in campgrounds that cater to RVs and car campers, this is a true wilderness site where all supplies, including drinking water (which must be treated), must be carried in and all waste (excluding human solid waste, which is managed via latrine) must be packed out. Its location, set slightly back from the main trail and close to the pristine Egge Lake, makes it a favored stop for those prioritizing privacy and natural scenery on their North Shore adventure.

The site embodies the spirit of Minnesota’s backcountry—rugged, beautiful, and focused on self-reliance and environmental respect. It’s part of the extensive network of over 90 campsites along the SHT, each offering a distinct feel, and North Egge Lake is particularly noted by past campers for its private feel and easy lake access for viewing the water and wildlife.

📍 Location and Accessibility

North Egge Lake Camp is officially situated on the Superior Hiking Trail, in the geographic area of Finland, MN 55603, USA. It is important for hikers to understand that SHT backcountry sites, including North Egge Lake, are hike-in only. They are not accessible by vehicle.

The nearest major access point is typically one of the local trailheads that service the Egge Lake area. Hikers often access this section of the trail near Finland, a small but important hub for North Shore recreation. For instance, the Egge Lake area can be reached via a hike from the Finland Recreation Center Trailhead on County Road 7, east of State Highway 1 in Finland. The hike to the Egge Lake area from this trailhead is approximately 2.3 miles, making it an accessible day hike or a short, easy entry point for an overnight stay, depending on the route chosen.

The SHT campsites are generally spaced every 5 to 11 miles apart, positioning North Egge Lake Camp perfectly for section hikers and thru-hikers. Since the site is a short distance from the main SHT path via a spur trail, hikers must be sure to look for the clearly marked signage to navigate the final approach to the campsite. The seclusion of the site is one of its primary draws, appealing to those who want a quieter experience away from the sounds of the main trail.

The South Egge site is more open to the lake, but the North site is nice as well. You can't see much of the lake from the site itself, but there is a very short path leading down to the lake. There is a nook with a big, partially submerged boulder where you can sit and take in the beautiful scenery and watch the creatures. We fit three small tents here no problem, and the site is set back from the trail so it is fairly private.
