North Fork Tipi Haven & camping Introduce
As a prominent establishment within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping offers a distinct and immersive outdoor experience for visitors to the stunning North Fork Valley of Colorado. This destination stands out by combining the rustic charm of traditional camping with unique glamping opportunities, primarily through its custom-crafted tipis. It caters to individuals, couples, and families seeking a memorable escape into nature, while still providing convenient access to the region's attractions and amenities.
The North Fork Valley, where North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping is situated, is often lauded as Colorado's "best-kept secret." It's a region of remarkable natural beauty, nestled beneath the majestic 12,000-foot peaks of the West Elk Wilderness and bordered by the dramatic Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This geographical positioning provides guests with breathtaking vistas of mountains such as Mt. Gunnison, Mt. Lamborn, and Landsend, particularly at sunrise. The valley itself is characterized by a unique climate that fosters a thriving agricultural landscape, abundant with organic farms, orchards, and vineyards. This creates a rich tapestry of experiences for visitors, from nature exploration to culinary delights and cultural immersion. While the exact address is 37601 Hwy 133, Hotchkiss, CO 81416, the location is conveniently positioned approximately 3 miles from Paonia and 6 miles from Hotchkiss, making it an accessible hub for exploring both towns and their surrounding areas.
The environment of North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping is designed to foster a connection with nature. Guests are invited to sleep under the renowned "Dark Sky" of the North Fork Valley, where the absence of significant light pollution allows for unparalleled views of the Milky Way and other celestial phenomena. The property itself features a large grass field, suitable for various activities and games, and offers opportunities for relaxation by Love Gulch, with hammocks often available for guests to unwind. The natural setting, while idyllic, does mean that visitors should be prepared for the presence of typical outdoor elements such as bugs and other critters, which are a natural part of an authentic camping experience. The overall ambiance is one of peace and tranquility, providing a true retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping is well-equipped to provide a comfortable and convenient stay for its guests, falling squarely within the services offered by the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. The primary accommodation option is the custom tipi, which comes furnished with comfortable foam mattresses, eliminating the need for guests to bring their own sleeping pads. While bedding is typically brought by the guests, the provision of a comfortable mattress significantly enhances the glamping aspect. A notable feature is the communal camp kitchen, which is set up for cooking and thoughtfully stocked with essential dishes, pots, pans, a coffee pot, and a tea kettle. This allows guests to prepare their own meals, adding to the self-sufficiency of the camping experience. The campground also offers showers and restroom facilities with running water, addressing essential needs for comfort and hygiene. While a shower house is available, it's worth noting that some sources suggest the water heater is on-demand. Additionally, WiFi is available at the campground, although guests are encouraged to "unplug" and fully embrace the natural surroundings, particularly to enjoy the dark sky without electronic distractions. For those who prefer traditional camping, there is at least one designated tent-only campsite available. The property is also pet-friendly, allowing dogs to enjoy off-leash fun, which is a significant draw for many travelers.
The features of North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping emphasize a unique and immersive experience. The core feature is undoubtedly the tipi camping itself, offering an authentic yet comfortable way to connect with the outdoors. The tipis come in various sizes, such as the 16 ft tipi suitable for two guests and the 20 ft Hawk tipi accommodating four. This flexibility caters to different group sizes. The emphasis on sleeping under the dark sky highlights a key natural attraction of the region, making it ideal for stargazing enthusiasts and astrophotographers. The availability of a shared outdoor kitchen space with a grill and stove further enhances the self-catering possibilities, providing a more robust culinary experience than traditional tent camping might allow. The property also offers opportunities for light recreation, including a short hike up "Mandala Mountain" located behind the solar panels, adding an element of exploration right on-site. The pet-friendly policy and the allowance for off-leash dogs are distinct features that cater to animal lovers. The inclusion of some power outlets for charging devices, while encouraging unplugging, offers a practical convenience for modern travelers.
Regarding promotional information, North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping offers an affordable and unique camping experience. Rates are competitive, with starting prices reported at $50 per night for two guests in a 16 ft tipi and $70 per night for four guests in the 20 ft Hawk tipi. The campground is open year-round, allowing for visits across all four seasons, though guests should be aware of seasonal weather changes in a mountain environment. The promotional messaging often emphasizes the opportunity to "sleep under the Dark Sky in the North Fork Valley of the Gunnison and marvel at the Milky Way," positioning it as an ideal destination for those seeking a profound connection with nature and stellar views. Its proximity to local attractions such as Big B's Delicious Orchards and numerous wineries, including Storm Cellar, within a short two-mile drive, enhances its appeal. The North Fork Valley itself is a promotional point, with its abundance of organic farms offering u-pick opportunities for peaches, plums, cherries, apricots, and apples. The area also boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, award-winning wines, and numerous outdoor activities like cycling, hiking, fishing in gold medal waters, and exploring national parks and forests such as Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Grand Mesa National Forest, and Gunnison National Forest. These surrounding attractions further highlight the value of choosing North Fork Tipi Haven & Camping as a base for exploration.

Customer Reviews
My fiancé and I had amazing time! It’s a quiet, serene spot and a simple getaway that doesn’t break the bank. Owners are very welcoming. Great for the fam and your pups! We are already recommending this place- will definitely be back with friends next year.
I stayed in the 16-foot Hawk tipi with my son and daughter (ages 11 and 7) one night on 9/28/20 and it was wonderful. It got a little cold that night but we were prepared and slept with our winter hats on and were fine. My son and daughter were in their own world, running around the meadow, pretending to be Native Americans or pioneers, etc. They climbed on some of the low trees and the hills around the tipi. The views just outside the tipi opening of the sunset and moonrise were breathtaking. Karen and Tony were so helpful and accommodating and thoughtful. They recommended we go to Orchard Valley Farms & Market and Winery, just up the road, and have the kids play in the North Fork of the Gunnison River, and that was an excellent suggestion! Paonia is a wonderful and flavorful place to spend some time. North Fork Tipi Haven is a perfect base for this.
Lovely host and a nice place to stay overnight.
My family and I had an unforgettable time staying in the bear tipi. We loved exploring paonia, river rafting and Big B’s were some highlights. The tipi beds were comfortable and the deck was perfect to enjoy the sunset, sunrise, and family time. Highly recommend staying here!!
Awesome spot, I camped behind the tipis and had a blast. Hosts were great too, would love to bring the fam next time.
