North Star Resort of Leech Lake Introduce
For Minnesotans yearning for that quintessential "Up North" experience, where fishing is paramount and the vast beauty of Leech Lake takes center stage, North Star Resort of Leech Lake in Federal Dam offers a unique destination. This resort and campground, steeped in local history and evolving to meet the needs of modern campers, promises a serene and focused getaway for those who prioritize time on the water and a quiet escape.
Located on the far northeastern side of Leech Lake, near the historic Federal Dam, North Star Resort has a distinct character. While some memories hark back to its earlier days as a traditional family resort with cabins, recent observations suggest a shift towards becoming more of an RV camp and a homestead for the current owner's family. This evolution means that while certain amenities might have changed, the core appeal – direct access to the incredible fishing of Leech Lake and a secluded atmosphere – remains steadfast. It’s a place that offers simplicity and focus for the dedicated angler and those seeking a peaceful lakeside retreat.
Imagine waking up, stepping out of your RV or cabin, and being just moments away from casting a line into the legendary waters of Leech Lake. The resort's focus is clearly on providing an excellent base for fishing enthusiasts, acknowledging the lake's reputation for its abundant walleye and other species. For locals, North Star Resort of Leech Lake represents a chance to connect with the timeless allure of Leech Lake, offering a down-to-earth camping and lodging experience where the priorities are clear: fishing, quiet, and embracing the vastness of one of Minnesota's most beloved natural treasures.
North Star Resort of Leech Lake is strategically located at 584 Northstar Dr NE, Federal Dam, MN 56641, USA. This address places it squarely in Cass County, in the heart of Minnesota's renowned lake country, specifically on the far northeastern side of the expansive Leech Lake. Its proximity to the Federal Dam site is a key geographical marker.
Accessibility to North Star Resort is generally straightforward via well-maintained state and county roads. Federal Dam is a small, unincorporated community that serves as a gateway to the northern reaches of Leech Lake. For Minnesotans traveling from the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area, the drive is typically around 2.5 to 3 hours, making it a feasible distance for weekend trips and longer vacations. The roads leading to the resort, including Highway 200, are scenic and well-suited for both cars and RVs.
One important aspect of its location, highlighted by customer reviews, is its secluded nature. Being on the "far NE side" near the Federal Dam site means it is somewhat off the main thoroughfare of more bustling Leech Lake towns like Walker. This provides a sense of tranquility and a true escape from urban noise. While satellite views might suggest a boat harbor, customer feedback indicates this may not be the case or that access is limited, suggesting that boat launching might rely on nearby public access points. For visitors who primarily seek direct lake access for fishing and a peaceful setting, the location offers precisely that, away from more commercialized areas of the lake.
Based on the provided information and the nature of a resort and campground, North Star Resort of Leech Lake likely offers a focused set of services geared towards anglers and those seeking a quiet lakeside experience. While comprehensive details are not explicitly listed, we can infer common offerings for such establishments in the Leech Lake area, alongside insights from customer reviews:
RV Campsites: Customer feedback indicates the resort "has become more of an RV camp." This suggests dedicated sites with varying hookups (e.g., electric, water, sewer) to accommodate recreational vehicles. RV campers often look for full hookups for convenience.
Cabins/Lodging: While the primary focus may have shifted, the resort's history suggests the availability of some cabins or lodging units. Reviews mention "cabins" from previous ownership, implying some form of fixed accommodation might still be present, offering a more rustic or charming alternative to RVs.
Direct Lake Access for Fishing: The paramount service is the access to Leech Lake for fishing. This likely includes dock space or slips for boats, given its strong appeal to anglers. The review stating "If you are just into fishing, its great" strongly emphasizes this core offering.
Fish Cleaning Facilities: Resorts focused on fishing commonly provide a fish cleaning house for guests to process their catch. While not explicitly stated, it's a common amenity for fishing resorts in Minnesota.
Basic Restroom Facilities: Campgrounds typically offer basic restroom facilities (e.g., vault toilets or flush toilets, and potentially showers) for guests, especially RV and tent campers, though cleanliness and modernity can vary at smaller, more rustic establishments.
Quiet and Secluded Environment: The reviews consistently highlight a "secluded area" and a focus on fishing, implying the "service" of providing a peaceful, less commercialized atmosphere.
It is important for potential visitors, especially those seeking a boat harbor or extensive walking beaches, to directly confirm current amenities with the resort, as changes in ownership and focus can alter available services. The resort appears to be tailored to a specific niche: anglers and those desiring a tranquil, RV-friendly base for enjoying Leech Lake.
North Star Resort of Leech Lake, despite its evolution, offers several distinct features and highlights that appeal to a specific kind of Minnesota vacationer:
Exceptional Fishing Opportunities: This is arguably the biggest highlight. Leech Lake is one of Minnesota's premier fishing destinations, known for its walleye, muskie, northern pike, and bass. The resort's location provides direct access to these legendary waters, making it an angler's paradise.
Secluded and Quiet Location: Situated on the "far NE side" near the Federal Dam site, the resort offers a peaceful and secluded atmosphere. This is ideal for those seeking to escape noise and crowds, providing a tranquil backdrop for relaxation.
Focus on RV Camping: Customer feedback indicates a shift towards being "more of an RV camp." This implies well-suited sites for RVs, likely with necessary hookups, catering to the growing number of RV enthusiasts who desire a lakeside base.
Rustic and Unpretentious Charm: While specific details on current cabins are limited, the historical context and review mentioning a "quaint, rustic and charming cabin" suggest an authentic, down-to-earth Northwoods feel, appealing to those who prefer simplicity over luxury.
Historical Connection: The mention of past family ownership (Miller family from 1955-1967) adds a layer of history and local lore, potentially appealing to those who appreciate places with a sense of continuity and tradition.
Proximity to Federal Dam Site: Being near the Federal Dam provides a unique landmark and potential area of interest for visitors, adding to the local exploration opportunities.
Lake Does Not Change (Great for Fishing): As highlighted in a review, the unchanging nature of Leech Lake itself means its renowned fishing remains a constant, reliable draw for the resort's guests.
It's important to note the specific feature mentioned about limited walking areas ("you can't go far" on the beach, and the "only place to walk is the 2.5 mile narrow road"). This indicates a focus on water-based activities and on-site relaxation rather than extensive shoreline or trail walking directly from the resort, making it best suited for those whose primary interest is fishing or peaceful lakeside lounging.

Customer Reviews
It appears on the satellite view Google map that a boat harbor with many boat slips has been installed since the review posted 10 years ago. This resort is definitely in a secluded area of Leech Lake on the far NE side, near the Federal Damsite.
My Great Grandparents, Ame and Skeet Miller owned Noth Star from about 1955 to 1967. Grandpa's brother Warren lived there for some time as well. Unfortunately, they were not Swedish. The Lake does not change and it is great for fishing. North Star has become more of an RV camp and homestead for the current owner's family. There is no Harbor for boats. If you a just imto fishing, its great. If you want to walk the beach, you can't go far. The owner's family put a barrier up so no one gan get very far. The only place to walk is the 2.5 mile narrow road.
I was fortunate to grow up going to this resort, camping for a weekend, family reunions that took over the entire grounds. Swimming, fishing, roasting marshmallows at the campfire and so much more. Wonderful place, fantastic owners/managers!!
My family has had an annual spot here longer than I can remember. Its home to many many great memories and it's the perfect place to get away and unwind a bit.
