Loved it here, to anyone that left a negative review, you obviously did t do your homework. It's State Land Free Use site, don't expect amenities or easy access. There's vault toilets, that's it. The roads aren't perfect, helps deter campers who want the "campground" experience. If that's you, Google search KOA. If that's not you, you want a quiet and secluded place and you enjoy hiking a little bit to see gorgeous scenic views, then try Flat Oak. And once there, head into Devil's Canyon, google search 5 Pools, and as always, take only photographs, leave only footprints. Happy Camping my friends.
Finally decided to check it out and I can't believe how many times I passed this turn off to the camp! And if that's what you keep doing you too will never see what beauty and positive energy flows thru here! Now I drove past the actual camping area to do a little "path less traveled" exploring and that's where the pictures I took are from. I would say any SUV with good factory clearance can take the road I traveled, however the further you venture I would definitely recommend 4wd, the views are worth it. Protect the Earth, Respect Mother Nature, Take in the Energy, Pack in Pack Out, and Always Tread Lightly! Sad Day if the Foreign Mining Company or any Company takes this away! Stop the Land Robbery!
A beautiful experience camping here. Sacred land of the Apache. You can feel the power of this place if you quietly sit and listen. Very clean amazing places for a hike. Please remember to leave no trace. This area is at risk of being destroyed be a foriegn mining company looking for copper. Please Save Oak Flats!
Nestled in the embrace of nature, Oak Flat Campground is a truly hidden gem. With its well-maintained facilities, spacious camping spots, and perfect blend of tranquility and adventure, it promises a memorable experience. Surrounded by towering trees and lush greenery, you'll find instant peace in this idyllic haven. The real magic lies in the majestic rock formations that adorn the landscape, creating a breathtaking backdrop for your camping adventure. Moreover, the campground holds sacred significance as the grounds where the Apache celebrated women's coming of age, adding a profound cultural touch to your stay. Though limited in amenities, the natural beauty of Oak Flat Campground more than compensates, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and seekers of serenity.
Be on alert at night I recently stayed at Oak Flat campground and really enjoyed it. It was so quiet and peaceful at night and the spot me and my buddy found was great. The reason I am giving 2 stars is because that night someone I guess pulled up into the campsite and started shooting either a handgun or rifle multiple times. They actually reloaded and on the second time me and my buddy actually had a bullet fly past just above our tent and could hear the bullets wizzing by and hitting the bushes around us. Very scary that someone would shoot in our direction while we are sleeping. They eventually got in their car and sped off. I really loved this campground but I would just say at night be on alert as it would be terrible to be injured out there with no cell reception and someone being dumb and shooting towards campers.
Beaut & peaceful. We're 40ft 5th wheel, access was definitely okay in dry weather, the main problem would be big ruts left from wet ground (so guessing not good access in wet) + look for rocks in the grass. We walked around the area and at least 5 spots we could have stayed in & wer'e big. It's free, rugged, saw a pit loo. Lots of campers especially tents around hidden amongst scenery.
The native Americans lost again to big corporation mining so Oak Flats , Tonto Forest Campground will be a mine tailings pit, gone. Last chance to say goodbye to some beautiful grand old oak trees. It's ironic they give it an Indian name, Tonto, yet the native American has no jurisdiction rights to the land, and then they just move them over and over. Keep trudging. The campsite is said to be relocated near by, and surrounding an artesian well. Guess what the next great resource is, water, they will probably move the campground back to the tailings and hopefully the oak trees will come back. They outlive us all , there are many there in the hundreds of years old. Go enjoy.
