Oak Hill Campground Introduce
Oak Hill Campground, nestled within the picturesque Wayne National Forest near Pedro, Ohio, represents a significant and recently renovated destination within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. As one of two primary camping areas within the popular Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area, Oak Hill offers a blend of natural tranquility and modern conveniences, making it an appealing choice for families, RV enthusiasts, and tent campers alike. Its integration into the expansive national forest system ensures a deep connection with nature, while its upgraded facilities provide a comfortable and accessible outdoor experience.
The environment surrounding Oak Hill Campground is characterized by the serene and rugged beauty of the Wayne National Forest. The campground is situated on a ridge on the west side of the 143-acre Lake Vesuvius, providing a unique vantage point and easy access to the lake's recreational offerings. The landscape is dominated by a mixed hardwood-pine forest, featuring many mature oak trees that provide ample shade and a sense of immersion in nature. This dense tree cover creates a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, allowing campers to truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoy the sounds of the forest. The rolling hills characteristic of the Appalachian foothills provide scenic backdrops and interesting terrain for exploration. Lake Vesuvius, a picturesque body of water formed by a historic iron furnace dam, adds a vital aquatic element to the environment. While the campground itself is not directly on the water, its close proximity ensures that the lake is a constant presence and a hub of activity. The air is typically clean and fresh, and the seasonal changes bring dramatic shifts in scenery, from the vibrant greens of summer to the fiery hues of autumn. The overall environment is one that promotes relaxation, natural observation, and active outdoor engagement, making it a true retreat for nature lovers.
Oak Hill Campground has undergone recent renovations and upgrades, positioning it as a well-appointed facility within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. It features 27 RV sites, including the Pine Knob Loop, and one group site known as Two Points Group Camp. A significant advantage for modern campers is that all campsites are fully accessible and come equipped with water and electrical hookups (including 20, 30, and 50 amp services to accommodate various RVs). While full sewer hookups are not available at individual sites, a convenient dump station is provided at the campground entrance, making waste disposal straightforward for RVers. For the comfort of all guests, two new flush restrooms with hot showers and one new vault restroom have been installed, ensuring clean and modern facilities. Each campsite is typically equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, allowing for traditional outdoor cooking and gatherings. The group site (Two Points Group Camp) can accommodate up to 50 people and includes a picnic shelter, making it ideal for larger gatherings or organized events. While specific details on laundry facilities are not prominently featured, the overall upgrades suggest a strong focus on providing essential comforts. The campground also ensures accessibility, with a number of sites designated as accessible, reflecting a commitment to serving all visitors. These comprehensive amenities distinguish Oak Hill Campground as a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the Wayne National Forest.
The features and activities available at Oak Hill Campground are abundant and largely centered around the natural attractions of the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area and the surrounding Wayne National Forest. Lake Vesuvius is a major draw, offering a wide array of water-based activities. Boating is popular, with a boat ramp providing easy access to the lake (electric motors only are typically permitted on the lake). Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities, with the lake being home to various species including bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Swimming is also a popular activity in designated areas of the lake. For land-based recreation, Oak Hill Campground serves as a hub for an extensive network of hiking trails. Four distinct hiking trails directly connect to different parts of the campground and the boat dock: the Rock House, Black Oak, Old Beach, and Scarlet Oak Trails. These trails, forming a 1.5-mile loop with varying elevation changes, offer opportunities for scenic walks, nature observation, and exploration of the forested terrain. A spur within the campground even connects to the Rock House Trail, leading to a historic cave once used by Native Americans. The broader Lake Vesuvius area boasts over 40 miles of trails, catering to hikers of all skill levels. While not explicitly stated for Oak Hill, the Wayne National Forest is also known for opportunities for hunting (during designated seasons with proper permits), wildlife viewing, and nature photography. The presence of mature oak trees suggests opportunities for observing local wildlife, including squirrels, various bird species, and potentially deer. The family-friendly nature of the campground also implies ample space for children to play and explore in a natural setting. The combination of lakeside recreation and extensive trail systems ensures that visitors to Oak Hill Campground have a wealth of outdoor adventures at their fingertips.
Promotional information for Oak Hill Campground emphasizes its seasonal operation, accessibility, and the ease of making reservations. The campground is open seasonally from early spring to late fall. It also opens during deer gun season, though only the Pine Knob Loop (which is part of the larger Oak Hill complex) operates during this time, and without water service. Reservations for most campsites can be made through recreation.gov, with a booking window requiring reservations to be made at least four days prior to arrival. Any unreserved campsites within that four-day cut-off window become available on a first-come, first-served basis, although no reservations are taken during the deer gun season, when it is exclusively first-come, first-served. The nightly fee for a single electric site is typically $20, with a discounted rate of $12.50 per night for Interagency Senior/Access Recreation Pass holders. The Two Points Group Campground is available for $35 per night. The campground is managed by the Ironton Ranger District (740-534-6500) and the Wayne National Forest Supervisor's Office (740-753-0101) for inquiries and up-to-date information. Directions are clearly provided: located 6.5 miles north of Ironton, Ohio, just off State Route 93, then turning onto County Road 29 and following signs to the Recreation Area. The campground is approximately one mile past the lake and boat dock. While described as having "heavy usage," indicating its popularity, the reservation system helps manage demand. Visitors are advised to check current conditions, especially regarding water availability during the late season or deer gun season. The campground also adheres to "Leave No Trace" principles, encouraging visitors to respect the natural environment. The overall promotional message for Oak Hill Campground is an invitation to experience a comfortable and amenity-rich camping trip amidst the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the Wayne National Forest and Lake Vesuvius.

Wonderful Park! Wonderful Trails especially the lake perimeter Trail lots of rock formations and cliffs, they say the lake trail is 7.7 miles however that is not correct. Be prepared to get wet feet on the 5th mile on the extreme end of the lake. Its not an easy trail especially for kids. Well maintained but lots of wet areas. Great place to kayak and they have kayak rentals. Campgrounds are beautiful and have amazing facilities!
Relatively new infrastructure. Large established trees that give good shade, but far enough apart so grass grows. Most of the camping spots are "level enough" and reasonably well spaced and large. Some of the spots are awkwardly set up with picnic tables and fire pits on the back side of the camper, but the large size of the spots makes it feel ok. the restrooms are clean and functional. The lake is electric motors only, and makes for nice canoeing with nature.
This is one of the most beautiful places I've camped and there have been a lot. Gorgeous wooded lots, clean restrooms and showers as well. We had a lake view from our. We will definitely be going back!
Beautiful weekend on Lake Vesuvius in southeastern Ohio. Wayne National Forest is a great area for camping, kayaking, fishing and hiking. 🏕 🎣 🛶 🏃
Camp hosts Ray and Tammy are so courteous and keep everything clean! On top of this being a great spot for camping hiking trails, a lake for fishing/kayaks etc. (it's not the clearest....could use some aeration and filtering), and a separate beach for swimming in the summer.
