Oak Openings White Oak Campground is situated in Whitehouse, OH 43571, USA, specifically within the vast Oak Openings Preserve Metropark. This location is a significant highlight, as the Metropark itself is a 5,000-acre natural preserve renowned for its unique oak savanna ecosystem – a rare global habitat characterized by alternating wetlands and vegetated dunes. This ecological distinction offers a camping experience unlike any other in Ohio, truly immersing visitors in a diverse and beautiful landscape.

Accessibility to the campground is straightforward, with clear signage within the Metropark leading to the White Oak Campground area. While the campground offers a feeling of being "in the middle of the woods," it's not so remote that it becomes inconvenient. Its proximity to major routes around the Toledo area means it's easily reachable for locals from various parts of Ohio. Once at the campground, direct access to the Metropark's extensive trail system allows campers to easily hike or bike to other parts of the preserve without needing to drive. This seamless integration with the park's offerings is a major convenience, especially for those looking to explore the natural beauty of Northwest Ohio on foot or by bicycle. It's important to note that some sources indicate White Oak Campground is near St Rt 295, so minimal road noise might be present, though it often doesn't detract from the overall peacefulness.

So pleased with my choice to book a site here! I was thoroughly impressed with Toledo Metroparks! Travelled from Columbus with 2 kids in tow for just a night- we loved the access to the playground, restrooms, and fire wood (which you pay for, I think I read somewhere that historically the gave you one bundle of firewood but that is no longer the case). Great little system for that with reusable bags you return. Restrooms were the cleanest at a park I ever been to, and on Sunday, we saw park staff visiting the restrooms to check on them/clean them, that is service! We were at site 6, I feel like we had the best site once we walked around and checked the others out. It was the most private, but also extremely close to the playground and restrooms and trail head. We also had an unexpected, surprise guest when we arrived, an Eastern Screech Owl fledgling was about shoulder height on a branch right at the campsite entrance! Wow!! We kept our respectful distance, but got some cool photos. We found one tick on my husband, so make sure to do tick checks once you go to sleep/return home. Finally, we always travel with at least 3 hammocks, and there were fantastic trees that allowed us to get all 3 up. I wanted to write a review so that A) people know this is a fantastic option for a ‘woodsy’ but with great conveniences, and that B) Toledo metroparks staff know that they’re doing a fantastic job in that park.

This might be the most well maintained campground I've ever been to. On Memorial Day weekend, with the campground fully booked, they kept the whole place very clean, restrooms included. The sites were also nicely spaced apart so it felt like you had your own spot in the middle of the woods. Also it's right along the main trail, so you can easily hike to the rest of the park should you want to enjoy the time to not have to so much as look at your car.

Nice little campsites! Stayed overnight in site 6 for the solar eclipse and it was a nice night. The sites are close to others so it can be loud. No showers either, just toilets and sinks which isn't that bad if only staying for a day. Site was clean and it's nice to have access to wood for cheap in the campground. Overall a great stay!

Good location for families with children. There’s a play set in the campground and only 5 mins away are trails and more playgrounds. The dishwashing station was helpful and grey water disposal conveniently located. Facilities were clean and well stocked. The downside was lack of privacy. You can see surroundings campsites even at night and the road is very close by (although quiet at night).
