Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
Introduction / Overview
For North Carolina residents seeking an ideal RV base camp in the heart of the Outer Banks (OBX), the OBX Campground in Kill Devil Hills is frequently described as a "hidden gem." Tucked away on scenic Colington Island, this park offers a unique blend of peaceful, soundfront tranquility and incredible proximity to the bustling central OBX attractions, including the historic Wright Brothers National Memorial and the beautiful Atlantic beaches.
This destination is strictly a full-hookup RV park, focusing on providing comfortable and highly functional amenities for motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers—tent camping is not permitted. The park features over 50 spacious, gravel RV sites, many of which offer picturesque views of the surrounding natural environment, including the adjacent Colington Creek/Intercoastal Waterway. The design philosophy centers on a relaxed, non-resort experience; sites are large, ensuring guests are "not on top of your neighbors," which contributes greatly to the overall peaceful, scenic atmosphere praised by local customers.
Management is known for its friendliness and attentiveness, ensuring the facilities—including bathhouses and laundry—are consistently clean and well-maintained. OBX Campground is the perfect compromise for those who want to be mere minutes from the central action of the Outer Banks—shops, restaurants, and public beach access—but prefer to retreat to a quiet, serene setting in the evening. Its location on the sound side provides a different, equally compelling coastal experience, complete with stunning sunset views and opportunities to explore the calm waters via a private dock.
Location and Accessibility
OBX Campground is strategically located on Colington Island, an area known for its unique blend of soundfront neighborhoods and marinas, while remaining geographically central to the main attractions of the Outer Banks.
The physical address is:
126 Marshy Ridge Rd, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948, USA
The park is easily accessed off of Colington Road, a low-speed road that branches off the main US-158 bypass. This positioning requires a brief drive through a quiet, local neighborhood, which enhances the feeling of escaping the tourist traffic. Despite this tucked-away location, its centrality is a major advantage:
The park itself features gravel roads and level, back-in gravel pads that are typically 30 x 60 feet, easily accommodating big rigs up to 60 feet with room for slide-outs. This design ensures both comfort and convenient maneuvering for all RV sizes.

The campground offers a comprehensive suite of services essential for a comfortable and extended RV vacation in the Outer Banks.

What is Worth Choosing
OBX Campground is the superior choice for North Carolina RVers who demand central Outer Banks accessibility without sacrificing peace and space.
The core reasons to choose OBX Campground are its unique, quiet location and its commitment to spacious, full-hookup sites. Unlike the busy, often exposed campgrounds right on the ocean strip, OBX Campground provides a truly peaceful, scenic campsite on Colington Island, offering sound and creek views. This gives you a more authentic, tranquil coastal experience with the added benefit of being shielded from the constant traffic noise of the main road. The consistently positive feedback regarding the large camping spaces and the quiet atmosphere underscores its value for families and those seeking relaxation.
Functionally, the campground is excellent. It offers reliable 30/50 amp full hookups, clean bathhouses, and convenient laundry facilities, making it perfectly suited for week-long or longer stays. Its unbeatable location, mere minutes from the beach, the Wright Brothers Memorial, and all major commercial amenities, means you get the best of both worlds: a quiet, secluded retreat at the end of the day and instant access to the adventure and history that define the Outer Banks. For a well-maintained, friendly, and strategically located RV park in the central OBX, this "hidden gem" is truly worth choosing.

Its a very peaceful, scenic campsite with large camping spaces so you are not on top of your neighbors. You can request to be at one of the front sites to get the best view of the "colington creek".
Hidden gem in the obx! Friendly staff, clean facilities, spacious and well maintained sites. Very quiet and peaceful campground.
One of the nicest campgrounds we have visited. Beautiful location. Sites are a great size and a good number have some views of the water. About a 5 minute drive from the Wright Brothers Memorial. Definitely will return for another visit to this campground and loved the area. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Great place. Not many trees over most sites if that’s important to you. Sites were very spacious with lots of room behind most all sites. Staff was very friendly. Not a huge place. Probably difficult to get into in the summer. Close to lots of stuff and restaurants in Kitty Hawk/ Nags Head. I would totally stay here again. Full hookups. Didn’t use the showers but I did look at them. Very clean and perfectly decent. We were on site 12. Backed up to the water. Price was half off in the off season with only around five campers in the whole park. Site was pretty level. Actually saw an alligator in the water! Cool. Go to Mama Kwans and eat fish tacos. The best!
So nice! Great spacious sites. Clean and friendly. Very peaceful. Just needs a pool... because of the jellyfish on the beach.
