Ocean Lake WHMA - Long Point Campground Introduce
Ocean Lake WHMA - Long Point Campground is a distinctive and appealing destination within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, primarily catering to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a more rustic and immersive experience in the heart of Wyoming's rich wildlife country. Located within the 11,505-acre Ocean Lake Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA), approximately 17 miles northwest of Riverton, this campground offers a unique blend of abundant wildlife, expansive water access, and a tranquil, undeveloped setting.
The environment at Long Point Campground is profoundly shaped by its proximity to Ocean Lake, a large body of water that was created by the Riverton Reclamation Project. The landscape consists of a wide range of habitats, from arid sagebrush grassland and cultivated croplands to permanently wet marsh and open water, all situated between the Owl Creek Mountains and the Wind River Range. This diverse ecosystem makes it a crucial breeding and nesting ground for thousands of migratory waterfowl, including Canada geese, sandhill cranes, and various duck species. The campground itself is often described as being situated on a "long point" extending into the lake, offering campers direct access to the water and expansive views. While natural shade might be limited in parts, the open spaces provide a sense of solitude and incredible opportunities for dark sky viewing at night. The ground can be rocky in some areas, which is an important consideration for tent campers.
As part of a Wildlife Habitat Management Area, the services and amenities at Long Point Campground are more primitive than those found in highly developed state or private RV parks. There are no electric, water, or sewage hookups available at individual campsites. This means campers should be self-sufficient regarding their power and water needs. However, essential facilities are provided to ensure a comfortable stay. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, some of which may be covered by a shade shelter or cabana, offering protection from the sun. The campground also features clean vault toilets, which are generally well-maintained and reported to be free of strong odors. Potable water is not reliably available at the campground, so campers must bring their own drinking water or have the means to filter water from the lake if necessary. There is no trash service provided, emphasizing the "pack it in, pack it out" principle, which contributes to the pristine nature of the area. A boat ramp is available at the campground, allowing for convenient access to Ocean Lake for various water activities. Cell phone service can be spotty, which for many, adds to the appeal of disconnecting and immersing oneself in nature.
The features of Ocean Lake WHMA - Long Point Campground are heavily oriented towards outdoor recreation and wildlife appreciation. Ocean Lake is particularly renowned for its exceptional fishing, with a diverse array of species including walleye, crappie (black and white), perch, bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, brown trout, rainbow trout, and burbot (ling). Fishing is permitted year-round, provided campers hold a valid Wyoming State fishing license. Boating is another popular activity, with ample space on the lake for various types of watercraft. The area is also a prime destination for hunting and trapping, especially known for waterfowl and pheasant hunting. The Wyoming Game & Fish Department actively manages the area for waterfowl production, releasing thousands of pheasants annually to supplement native bird populations. Beyond hunting and fishing, the WHMA is a fantastic spot for wildlife observation and photography. Visitors can frequently spot mule deer, muskrats, raccoons, red foxes, mink, skunks, and a wide variety of birds including grebes, terns, pelicans, snipes, and avocets. The park also plays a role in supporting habitat for endangered species like whooping cranes during migration periods. Hiking is possible on the improved roads and within the vast sagebrush grasslands, offering opportunities to explore the extensive area. During winter, a specific half-mile area around the lake's aeration system is closed to human presence from December 15 to March 10 to protect wildlife.
From a promotional standpoint, Ocean Lake WHMA - Long Point Campground is primarily known for being a free, first-come, first-served camping destination. This makes it particularly attractive to budget-conscious travelers and those who prefer spontaneous trips without the need for advance reservations. While there are no direct nightly fees for camping at Long Point, visitors should be aware of any state regulations or licenses required for activities like fishing or hunting. Given its free and primitive nature, there aren't typically "promotional offers" in the commercial sense. Instead, its primary draw is the value derived from its natural beauty, abundant recreational opportunities, and the absence of camping fees. Information regarding the campground is primarily disseminated through the Wyoming Game & Fish Department website and various online camping communities and forums where campers share their experiences and tips. It's recommended to consult the official Wyoming Game & Fish Department website for the most current information regarding area closures, regulations, and any changes in management policies, as these areas are managed for wildlife first and recreation second. The 14-day camping limit is in place to ensure fair access for all users and to minimize impact on the natural environment.
In summary, Ocean Lake WHMA - Long Point Campground, within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, offers a unique and authentic Wyoming outdoor experience. It's an ideal choice for self-reliant campers, anglers, hunters, and wildlife enthusiasts who appreciate a less developed environment and the freedom of dispersed or free camping. Its rich natural setting, coupled with a focus on conservation and outdoor pursuits, makes it a rewarding destination for those looking to connect deeply with Wyoming's wild side.

Nice little free campground. We stopped here for a night on our road trip to the badlands. About 5 miles down a maintained gravel road. We have our 35 foot camper in tow and didn’t have any problems. There was only one other camper on the opposite side of the campground. Nice spot.
This is the biggest and most developed of the Ocean Lake campgrounds. Navigation and road access are relatively easy. Almost any vehicle or trailer combination can reach this campground with ease. The roads are improved dirt or gravel with limited mud or ruts. The campground has no potable water but lake access is possible at certain points. Many of the campsites come with (10) sun/wind picnic shelters grills and ( a few!) fire rings. There a proper concrete boat ramp and 20' aluminum fishing pier. Due to no trees and being on a narrow peninsula it can be often times very windy but also causes to have few if any insect problems. We visited here September 2023.
Roads looked like they have done maintenance on the roads in and out of there.
Great place to go to get the kids out of the house for a bit. Kids wanted to fly kites but there wasn't any wind blowing. Go figure right.
Kinda felt like the place in a pasture where the watering hole (lake) is. Weird. I can't imagine the bees, bugs and flies in the summer no way
