Oconee River Campground Introduce
Nestled in the heart of Oconee National Forest, Oconee River Campground offers a tranquil escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Located in Greensboro, GA, this campground is an ideal spot for those seeking a quiet retreat surrounded by natural beauty. With its affordable rates and picturesque setting, it’s a perfect destination for a night’s stay or a short getaway.
The campground provides basic amenities, including parking spots and pit toilets, making it a budget-friendly option for campers. Its proximity to the Oconee River offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, and while the hiking trails are short, they provide a peaceful way to explore the area. The nearby Scull Shoals Historic Site, though requiring a drive due to trail washouts, is a fascinating historical attraction worth visiting.
One of the highlights of Oconee River Campground is its serene environment, which has delighted visitors with sightings of local wildlife, including the majestic Bald Eagle. However, it’s important to note that the campground is near a highway, which can be noisy, and there are limited options for extended walks or hikes due to surrounding private land. Solar power users may find the tall trees and large hill challenging for optimal sunlight exposure.
Customer feedback highlights the campground’s affordability and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors appreciate the $5 nightly rate, the opportunity to fish, and the chance to connect with nature. While some note the limitations in hiking and solar accessibility, many find the experience rewarding, especially with the chance to spot wildlife like Bald Eagles.
- Affordable camping at just $5 per night.
- Prime location for fishing along the Oconee River.
- Short hiking trails for leisurely exploration.
- Proximity to the Scull Shoals Historic Site.

Customer Reviews
Decent place to stop for a night. It’s quite and only $5. They’ve got plenty of spots to fish, some short hiking trails, but the trail to scull shoals historic site has been washed out so you’ll have to drive there to see it. We did get some good pics of a Bald Eagle while there which made the stay worth it.
$5 a night for a parking spot and a pit toilet. If you like to do anything other than sit at your campsite or take out your boat, this may not be your place. There's a loud highway nearby. There's a farm across the river that has barking dogs. It seems to be surrounded by private land - not a place for hiking, or even going on walks longer than 10-15 minutes (walking on the road to the highway is about it, unless you enjoy small circles). It's next to a large hill with tall trees, so solar is suboptimal. Cell service on verizon ranges from 1 to 2 bars - but it's not 0 bars.
It doesn't look as good as all the pictures on reviews anymore, it's grown up and grass is high and trees down trash everywhere, just sad that the rangers don't do more to take care of it!
5 campsites. Each with a table and fire pit. They claim to have grills but they are all rusted out and basically just rusted metal stumps in the ground with no actual grill. The bathrooms are exactly what you'd expect with a vault toilet, which is fine - except that the doors are hanging off the hinges at an angle so that the door doesn't close without enormous pressure. The place is loaded with trash. Step outside your small tent pad and you can't go more than a step or two without hitting someone's old, aged, trash. There are bear-proof trash cans on site, but they were so full I could barely squeeze my trash in. You can hear the highway, the info signs are falling apart, there's trash everywhere, and the bathroom doors don't close easily. I don't see any reason to return. Also, the trail up to the Skull Shoals site is indefinitely (?) closed.
No visible trails for hiking. Not ideal for fishing either. If you have a boat or just wanna camp in the woods, then it may suit you. But it's not the best place.
