Onslow Beach Reservation Office Introduce

The Onslow Beach Reservation Office serves as the central point of contact and management for Onslow Beach, a distinct recreational area located aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Within the broader category of Campgrounds & RV Parks, Onslow Beach holds a unique position as a facility exclusively for authorized patrons, including active duty, National Guard, Reservists, retired military personnel, 0-100% DAV, Purple Heart recipients, Former POWs, Veteran Caregivers, and DoD Civilians, all with a valid military or DoD ID card. This exclusivity ensures a specific community atmosphere and tailored services, making it a highly valued amenity for those within the military community seeking a coastal retreat.

Environment: Pristine Coastal Beauty within a Military Base

The environment of Onslow Beach is its most significant asset, offering a pristine coastal setting directly on the Atlantic Ocean. This area is characterized by wide, sandy beaches caressed by clear seas, providing ample space for relaxation and recreation. While located within the bounds of a military installation, the recreational area maintains a peaceful and natural ambiance, distinct from the more active base operations. The North Carolina coast here boasts a mild climate, allowing for enjoyable beach days for a significant portion of the year, from warm, humid summers ideal for swimming to cooler, breezy months perfect for long walks. The environment encourages direct engagement with the ocean, with opportunities for sunbathing, wading, and observing coastal wildlife. Crucially, the sand dunes are protected, and guests and pets are prohibited from them to preserve this delicate ecosystem. The overall natural setting provides a tranquil escape, offering the therapeutic sounds of crashing waves and fresh sea air, a highly sought-after environment for a beach vacation.

Each site typically includes a picnic table and fire ring for outdoor enjoyment. There are also overflow sites available for dry camping.

    • Ospreys (3 Bedrooms/2 Bath)
    • E-9 Homes (3 Bedrooms/2 Bath)

These lodging units often come fully equipped with kitchens (including pots, pans, utensils, microwave, stove, and refrigerator), air-conditioning, cable, complimentary Wi-Fi (though service may be intermittent due to island location), linens, and Smart TVs.
  • Restroom and Shower Facilities: Clean bathhouses with restrooms and showers are available for campers, particularly beneficial for those in RVs without full facilities or tent campers (though tent camping is not explicitly listed as a primary offering for the general public, it's often available in military campgrounds).

  • Laundry Facilities: Self-service laundromats are typically available, offering a practical amenity for longer stays.
  • Pet-Friendly: Onslow Beach is notably pet-friendly, allowing pets in specific lodging units (Lodges & Ospreys) and providing a designated dog beach located on the South end of the island. Strict rules regarding leashing and cleanup are enforced, and pets are prohibited from main swimming beaches.
  • Lifeguard Services: During peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), lifeguards are on duty at designated swimming areas, ensuring a safer beach experience.
  • Check-in/Check-out: The Onslow Beach Guest Services Office (BA-275 Beach Road) handles check-ins, with specific hours and procedures, including options for after-hours check-in with a host camper.
Features: Recreational Opportunities and Exclusive Access

Onslow Beach's features are designed to enhance the beach vacation experience and leverage its exclusive access for military patrons. These include:

  • Direct Beach Access: The primary feature is the direct and easy access to miles of uncrowded, pristine beach, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, shell collecting (including shark teeth hunting), and leisurely walks.
  • Water-based Recreation: Beyond swimming, the clear waters are ideal for wading, boogie boarding, and simply enjoying the surf. While not explicitly detailed, local conditions may allow for kayaking and other non-motorized water sports.
  • Recreational Courts: The facility often includes amenities like basketball courts and volleyball courts, offering opportunities for active recreation outside of beach activities.
  • Picnic Areas and Pavilions: Picnic tables are available at campsites and likely in communal areas. Some facilities have pavilions with changing rooms, ideal for day use or group gatherings.
  • Special Events: As a recreation area, Onslow Beach may host special events or activities, especially during peak seasons, enhancing the community feel.
  • Proximity to Base Amenities: Being located on Camp Lejeune provides authorized patrons convenient access to other base amenities, such as the Commissary and Exchange, for broader shopping needs.

I'm going to be honest as possible. The beach is unbelievable. It is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever had the honor of seeing. The campground itself needs work. I had to take a cold shower five days in a row. There was no hot water for the showers or laundry. It would be nice to have a place to fish the Intracoastal waterway, like a wood walkway set along the waterway. All of the staff are super nice and polite, extremely professional. The campsites are very clean but need work like new stone on the pads. The showers are very dated. There is very little water pressure. I enjoyed my stay there and I appreciate the campground. It just needs some attention.

10/10 I loved our stay, I’ve stayed at a few different military hotel / B&Bs like this before and I’m always so happy with the experience. We stayed in the cabanas this time but have also stayed in the lodges and you can’t go wrong either way. Always clean and have enough basic necessities for your stay! The cabanas are bit more high tech than the lodges as they have dish washes / laundry as well as smart tvs but it’s all about what you’re looking for on your vacation! I was recovering from surgery this time around so we spent a lot of time in the cabana itself and it was truly a perfect place to do so. Last time we stayed in the lodges were out and about so we didn’t need all the extras - but staff is always so friendly and it’s just such a pretty place to be.

I haven't been out since this place was open to the public. But had a lot of fun when it was filled with unexploded ordinance back in the day. The joys of being married to a combat engineer🤣🤣👋👋 yep that was me. Really enjoyed the tip toe down memory lane though🙌🙌 oorahh. But the shower grab bar planting me on my backside when it broke wasn't fun!!

We stayed here right after PCSing while waiting for our HHG to arrive and I couldn’t have made a better choice. The lodge was a little run down, but it was clean and comfortable and quite honestly, that’s all I ask for. We were able to cook instead of eat out constantly which was nice after moving across the country and eating out a lot. We have 2 dogs and being here with them was so much easier than being in a hotel. We were maybe a 1 minute walk from the beach and my daughter wanted to spent all day out there. I also forgot to mention she has loved sleeping in the loft area. The whole lodge has been perfect for our little family. It’s been so quiet the whole time we’ve been here and even now while I type this, I can hear the ocean and it’s awesome. It’s very remote out here with only the mini mart close by, but the commissary and food stuff on base is only 15 minutes away. If you’re looking for a beach vacation with no frills, this is it! I am already looking for an excuse to come stay here with friends. We will definitely be staying here again when we PCS. I would highly recommend staying here for any occasion. For what they offer, you can’t beat it!

The rooms are simple and primitive where you have most of what you need: a bed, a bathroom, and a kitchen. You sleep and clean up and prepare a meal or two, but mostly you can enjoy the fresh air and spectacular views of ocean life as well as the water in the inlet.
