Warning! The pin on this place is not near the dunes themselves, it’s pinned on an information center (which has good information). But if you’re looking to get to the actual dunes you have to pick one of the areas north or south of it. Like the day use area a bit north, and around the eel campgrounds to the south. Pretty much once you start seeing atv/buggy rentals you are close to sand (if driving from north or south). For the dunes themselves they are amazing. We walked a bit of the trail head close to eel creek campground and it was amazing. I’d never experienced that before and the amount and size of the dunes is definitely immense enough to get immersed and feel like you’re in a desert. Just be prepared to take your shoes off!
The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area extends for 40 miles along the Oregon Coast. They run from Florence to Coos Bay. Bordering the Pacific Ocean, you can drive a dune buggy or quad bike on the beach as well as the sand dunes. We had a blast riding up and down the dunes before heading to the beach to cool down. Woo hoo! A great day if you're looking for an adventure 😀
There are so many activities that are offered here. One of my favorites is mushroom picking. You can pick up different types of permits to pick mushrooms or greens throughout the area. They offer maps and help you with locations as to where you might have the best luck to find what you are looking for. The staff is very knowledgeable of the area.
Always fun to ride. Just wish when it's busy that most people would realize it's better to ride to the right of the main road from bull run to spin reel and again on the road to the right of the main oe on the way back. There could be less head on collisions if people could ride this way more often. Lots of area to ride!
This great expanse of dunes and beach is a prestine wilderness. At least when we went in early autumn. Cold and windy. The scenery of these massive dunes (climbing some 60 feet) with the beach and sea below is a spectacle.
