Osgood Tentsite Introduce

Welcome to Osgood Tentsite, a unique offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, situated along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Randolph, NH 03593. This is not a traditional campground or RV park but rather a designated tentsite catering primarily to hikers and backpackers seeking a more secluded wilderness camping experience in the White Mountains.

The environment of Osgood Tentsite is described as perfect for wilderness camping. It is located in a secluded area, near the Osgood Trail, offering a sense of remoteness and immersion in nature. The site features five large, and in some cases double-sized, elevated wooden platforms for pitching tents. This design helps keep tents off the ground and dry. In the center of the tentsite, there is a shared campfire pit, fostering a communal atmosphere among campers.

For the convenience and safety of campers, Osgood Tentsite provides two shared bear boxes for secure food storage, protecting supplies from wildlife. The water source is conveniently located at the junction of the Osgood Trail and the tentsite, making it easily accessible for campers to replenish their water. While the site is secluded, its proximity to the Osgood Trail makes it a natural stop for through-hikers on the Appalachian Trail, as noted by past visitors who encountered hikers on long journeys.

Reviewers highlight the special and secluded nature of the spot, emphasizing its ideal setting for wilderness camping. The elevated wooden platforms are a notable feature, appreciated by those whose tents require staking, as rocks are often readily available to assist with setup. The experience at Osgood Tentsite is often characterized by a sense of camaraderie with fellow hikers and a deep connection with the natural surroundings.

Please note that Osgood Tentsite offers a primitive camping experience focused on tents. It does not provide amenities typically found in traditional campgrounds or RV parks, such as restrooms, showers, or hookups. It is best suited for individuals and groups comfortable with backcountry camping and who are prepared with their own gear and supplies. If you are a local user seeking a genuine wilderness camping experience along the Appalachian Trail near Mt. Madison, Osgood Tentsite offers a unique and memorable option.

Perfect campsite. There are 5 LARGE (some are double) elevated wooden platforms for tents. There are 2 shared bear boxes and 1 shared campfire pit in the center. The site is secluded but near the Osgood Trail. It seems that most people at the site were through hikers. Went over July 4 weekend (2022) and Met a retired southern couple hiking from Georgia (started in Feb) and a couple of guys from Quebec that also started in Georgia (in March). I have an ultralight A-Frame tent which requires staking into the ground to stand up (not self standing) so I needed to find large rocks to hold the tent, they were already on the tent as others needed the same thing. Also, the water source is at the junction of the Osgood trail and the tent site so it's conveniently passed. We spent 2 nights and left our gear for the day for an out and back hike to Mt. Madison.

Special secluded spot! Ideal for wilderness camping. Many years ago I had come down with hypothermia hiking down from Mt. Madison Hut. I dressed well and ate but it was rainy in the low 50’s. I was unable to continue on when luckily I ran in to two women also hiking and they were camping at the Osgood Tent Platform. They invited me to stay the night which I did, got warm, ate some dinner rested and was OK! Thank goodness they were there. This was before cell phones, satellite phones or personal locator beacons. We had a great time. It is way out in the woods. That night every time we zipped the tent up animals jumped onto the tent platform and we never knew what they were. They were kind of heavy making the boards bounce, they walked in circles around the tent and made no noise. The second we unzipped the tent they were gone in a flash. New Hampshire is a lovely special place. Somewhere I have photos and will try to post them.
