Outback Montana RV Park & Campground Introduce
Outback Montana RV Park & Campground stands as a quintessential destination within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, offering an authentic and immersive outdoor experience in the heart of Montana's breathtaking landscape. Located in Bigfork, Montana, just a few miles south on Highway 35, and remarkably close to the north end of the majestic Flathead Lake, this park provides an ideal basecamp for exploring the wonders of Northwest Montana, including the iconic Glacier National Park. It distinguishes itself by providing a genuine camping environment amidst abundant nature, moving away from the "paved glorified parking lots" often associated with some modern RV parks.
The environment at Outback Montana RV Park & Campground is characterized by its heavily forested and shaded setting. The campground is carved into a hillside, with abundant trees offering a natural separation between sites, providing a sense of privacy and a genuine connection to nature. Visitors can expect to be surrounded by the sounds of the wilderness and the fresh, clean air of the Montana outdoors. The property boasts a diverse flora, including over 50 species of trees and beautiful native wildflowers, enhancing the natural appeal. At night, the absence of excessive artificial light allows for spectacular stargazing, making the stars seem "so close that you can touch them." While the terrain is somewhat hilly with gravel roads, which some larger rigs might find challenging to navigate, the overall atmosphere is peaceful and serene. Its strategic location places it moments away from Flathead Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi, offering immediate access to a vast aquatic playground. Furthermore, it is within a reasonable driving distance, approximately an hour, from the west entrance of Glacier National Park, allowing for day trips to one of America's most treasured natural wonders.
As a comprehensive provider in the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, Outback Montana RV Park & Campground offers a variety of services to accommodate diverse camping preferences. They provide 40 RV sites, many of which are pull-through, and equipped with full hookups including water, sewer, and electric (ranging from 20, 30, to 50 amp services). This makes it particularly "big rig-friendly," catering to travel trailers over 40 feet long. For those without an RV, the campground offers sleep cabins and campers for rent, described as being like motel rooms but with an added outdoor appeal. Tenting is also a popular option, with 10 dedicated tent sites available, some offering water and electric hookups, and primitive or "dry" tent camping also an option. Amenities designed for comfort include clean restrooms and showers, though some sources mention a small fee for hot water in showers. Free Wi-Fi is available, especially in the office area, allowing campers to stay connected. For groups, there's a covered group picnic area complete with barbecues and tables, facilitating communal gatherings. Other practical services include a small on-site store offering essentials like ice and firewood, and outdoor boat and motorhome storage, highlighting their commitment to convenience for all types of travelers. The campground operates year-round, with winterized RV sites and cabins available, making it a viable destination even during the colder months.
The features of Outback Montana RV Park & Campground emphasize comfort, convenience, and access to local attractions. Each campsite, whether for RVs or tents, typically includes a picnic table and a firepit, allowing for classic campfire experiences (checking for burn restrictions is always advised). The "wonderfully shaded sites" provide a welcome respite during warmer days. The campground is notably pet-friendly, ensuring that furry companions can join in the adventure. Beyond the immediate campground amenities, a significant feature is its proximity to a plethora of outdoor activities and local attractions. Guests can easily access Flathead Lake for swimming, fishing (known for Kokanee Salmon, whitefish, and large lake trout), boating, water skiing, and paddleboard and kayak rentals. The nearby Swan River Nature Trail offers a flat, smooth gravel path perfect for running or leisurely walks. The charming town of Bigfork, just 3.5 miles away, provides access to restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions like the Bigfork Summer Playhouse. The strategic location also serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring Glacier National Park, Wayfarers State Park, and the vast Flathead National Forest, which offer endless opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and nature photography. During winter, popular activities include skiing, snowmobiling, dogsledding, and ice fishing, further extending the park's appeal.
Promotional information for Outback Montana RV Park & Campground often highlights its value and welcoming atmosphere. They promote competitive daily, weekly, and monthly rates, making it an economical choice for both short and extended stays. For instance, dry campsites start around $18/night, partial hookup sites at $18-$20/night, and cabins at $46/night, with weekly and monthly rates offering significant savings. The emphasis is on providing a "peaceful atmosphere" and a "genuine connection to nature" as opposed to a highly developed resort feel. The campground proudly states it is under new ownership with a "friendly and caring management team" dedicated to making every stay perfect. Online booking is available, simplifying the reservation process. They encourage visitors to view their website and attractions page for more detailed information on nearby activities and places to visit, ensuring guests can plan their "one-of-a-kind Montana adventure." Customer Reviews
We have a 42’ MotorHome towing a 20’ trailer along with an F-150. The spot they put us in accommodated our units and we were generally happy. The park is beautiful and very quiet. The problem was getting into the space. They originally had us in one spot but because of our size I couldn’t get into it. If we could have, the space was big enough for us. They moved us to another spot, which I was able to pull in first attempt. So they are very accommodating and helpful. But here’s the deal: if you have a unit longer than 30’, you are sliding down the road as you leave. You see it’s posted as a 7% downgrade on gravel! I believe them. I pulled our trailer down the down the hill and slide 2 feet and rolled one foot. It was beyond scary! When we left I backed down the hill from our spot because it was not as steep, rather than attempt to leave via their path. It was just too dangerous to pull forward. The hill is that steep. I spoke to other campers with big units and they expressed the same concern. This is too bad. The park itself is really nice! Great WiFi, quiet with deer roaming about. But getting in and out with a rig that is longer than 30’ is challenging. Anything shorter than that and this is a 5 star park. Longer than that you could stay here but it is a challenge to get in and out. One other thing. They recently installed about 15 brand new cabins that once open will make this a great park. Service was great, the helpers were quiet, but the space between sites was a little tight. Stay here but just be forewarned if you have a big unit.
Would rate a 3 to 4 *, the site we booked was extremely small, thank god there was 2 of us to get it parked after a few tries, maybe add a few feet to your Camper size when booking to ensure you fit! Location was perfect to get to the lake, very short drive. Campground was clean (minus the insane amount of dust whenever the ATV drove by) amenities of the campground like the shower house could use an upgrade but it did the job. Good price tag for our stay. Did not meet the owner/management so no comment on that. Shared power with 4 other sites is a bit of a pain in the butt, Make sure you have a long extension cord!
Stayed here long term and had nothing but issues with the park employees and the owners. Repeatedly had a park employee (Neil) come into our site and turn our tree lights off instead of asking us to turn them off, same employee repeatedly caused issues making up lies and talking badly about us to everyone at the park. Owners kicked us out with a 3 day notice with no real reason, mind u we had a contract and they broke that contract. We followed rules to a T and never once complained about anything. There is always sewage problems and the park manager does not care. DO NOT STAY HERE
We stayed at Outback Montana RV Park & Campground because of its proximity (45 miles or so) to Glacier National Park, thinking the close location to the large lake nearby would be a positive. When we arrived, the full hook up site we had selected had the sewer on the wrong side of the site, and was not at all level. We requested a different site, and were able to hookup at the new site, and although the site wasn’t level, it was a bit better than the first. The sites were very narrow, and covered with gravel, and way too close to other sites. The site next to us was one that a family that worked at the campground was using. Although the temperature was not warm, or cold, they were running a very loud motor (ac?) all afternoon. In addition, two VERY loud pickup trucks were left on idle for long periods of time two different times, at the same site. So much for a peaceful camping experience! I was very disappointed we selected this campground. There is no place to walk from the campground. The facilities are being upgraded, so hopefully they will also improve the sites themselves. The pricing was WAY too high for the amenities (or lack thereof), and the narrow, hilly, and noisy sites.
Campground is steep and sites/roads are tight for anything over 35 feet long. Even smaller rigs may have trouble with slides on both sides. I don't mind a smaller campground, but don't accept reservations for rigs that can't fit properly. I made my reservation 6 months before I visited and gave the actual length of our fifth wheel (not model number) I arrived and had to park on a 30 degree incline to check in. I then had the person checking my in comment on "how big" our camper was. It's 37' actual length and not one of the larger rigs on the road. Again, if they can't accommodate larger rigs, don't let them reserve sites. We managed to make it work, but have to re-connect and move over 4' to balance the slides between trees and dirt embankment. The trees weren't trimmed well and there was a lot of overhang and branches touching the rig. Leaving was fun, as we had off-camber turns, steep hills and had to go to the bottom of the campground to reverse direction and leave. On a positive note, power was good and never went out, the shade was fantastic (do NOT count on Starlink though), the water and sewer worked fine, the site was level and the campground was generally clean, even if the "grounds-keeping" was lacking when it came to tree-trimming. I even liked the individual trash can at each site for convenience.
