Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Wisconsin locals, the Outdoor Group Campground at Black River State Forest is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's an accessible and invaluable resource for creating lasting memories with friends and family in the heart of their home state's natural beauty. Its suitability stems from several key aspects that resonate deeply with the local community.

Firstly, the sheer size and group-oriented nature of the campground make it uniquely perfect for larger gatherings. Whether it's an annual family reunion, a scout troop outing, a church retreat, or a large gathering of friends, finding a single site that can comfortably accommodate 30 campers and a dozen vehicles is a rare gem. This eliminates the headache of booking multiple individual sites and trying to coordinate them, fostering a stronger sense of community and shared experience. Many Wisconsin families have traditions of large outdoor get-togethers, and this campground directly caters to that need.

Secondly, its location within the Black River State Forest offers an authentic Wisconsin outdoor experience without requiring extensive travel. Locals know and appreciate the diverse landscapes found in their state, and this forest delivers with its pine and oak woods, sandstone abutments, and abundant wildlife. The opportunity to see deer grazing just outside your tent is a testament to the area's natural integrity and provides a genuine connection to Wisconsin's wild side. For those looking for a quick escape from city life, this offers a truly immersive nature experience that's still within a reasonable driving distance for most residents.

Furthermore, the blend of rustic camping with convenient amenities strikes the right chord. While it's not a resort, the clean outhouse, readily available water (during the season), and nearby shower facilities mean campers aren't entirely roughing it. This balance makes it appealing to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts, from seasoned campers to those new to the experience, ensuring comfort without detracting from the natural appeal. The proximity to Hatfield and Lake Arbutus also means that additional recreational opportunities – like boating, swimming, or simply grabbing supplies – are just a short drive away, adding to the convenience for local users.

Finally, the sense of freedom and space provided at this former horse camp is a distinct advantage. Reviewers consistently highlight the "lots of space" and the feeling that "a county fair could be held on this site." This allows groups to spread out, engage in various activities, and enjoy privacy even within a large group setting. For locals who value their outdoor leisure and seek venues that can accommodate their larger social circles, the Outdoor Group Campground truly stands out as an ideal destination, inviting them to embrace the natural wonders of Wisconsin year after year.

Been here twice now and both were great times. The water was shut off in October that i didn't know was going to happen yet so had to drive to Hatfield to get water. Saw deer grazing every night, once during the day after nap. Lots of space.

The group campsite at the Black River State Forest is huge! I wish they would break it up into multiple group sites, because a county fair could be held on this site. It used to be a horse camp, with pads for horse trailers and space to move around on horseback. Now, you can have up to about 30 campers and 12 vehicles officially. The outhouse is clean, the firepits are well laid out, and it is easy to get in and out. If you want a shower, you can pop over to the County Campground a couple miles west. 25 cents per minute gets you a nice shower. In theory, there is a $3 fee to enter the county park, but they will usually just let you in if you are just showering and have your state park sticker.

This group campsite is a great deal, and one of the few in the state that isn't a shared group campsite. The amount of room is incredible, with enough space to set up multiple yard games and have space between everyone's tents. Over the past 5 years of camping here we've also never had an issue with animals of any kind. Firewood is on site and very cheap, electric water pump on site (although it tastes as bad as all the water in BRF), and nice pit toilets. Book early, this site fills up way in advance

Excellent camp ground. Huge area. Very private. Very little mosquitoes. No animal issues. It was clean. Although the well water stinks and rusty but thats to be expected. Showers are available for 2 quarters 6 minutes west.

Crazy huge. Easily fit 50 tents. Very nice facilities. Only complaint would be no great hiking trails close by
