This campground provides a variety of services and features catering to both RV enthusiasts and campers looking to connect with nature. The location is frequently praised for its beautiful waterfront sites, offering breathtaking views, especially during the off-season when crowds are minimal. However, during peak season, waterfront sites can be close together, potentially impacting views.
Here's a breakdown of what you can expect:
Customer reviews highlight the outstandingly beautiful location and the friendly staff. However, some reviews mention concerns about the presence of sand spurs in the grass, making it less ideal for pets, and the narrow access road. Additionally, be aware that the "grill" advertised with deluxe sites is a grate for the fire pit, not a dedicated gas grill.
Despite these points, many visitors find the location and overall experience worthwhile, particularly the scenic waterfront views and the peaceful atmosphere during the off-season. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway with beautiful scenery, the Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday is worth considering. Be sure to plan accordingly, especially if traveling with pets or a large RV.

It's a decent campground that has lost their focus. The location is spectacular. We were fortunate enough to be there in the off season when it wasn't crowded. The water front sites are very close together. If the campground is full you barely have any view. Thankfully we were pretty well alone which made that part nice. It's not dog friendly. They don't keep up with their grass cutting and that has allowed sand spurs to flourish. Our dogs didn't want to walk in the grass there because they learned their paws get hurt. I have cared for sand yards and you can pretty well eliminate the pain peas in a summer if you don't let the grass get long. It's bad enough that guests were warning others to not walk their pets through the grass to get to the water. This campground is far more expensive than another that we love 45 minutes away (towards the beach) that doesn't have sand spurs and also has spacious sites. It should be a nice campground and can be if they return their focus to their guests.
Outstandingly beautiful location! We had an RV lot backed right up to the water, and it was amazing! The lot was a very good size, plenty of room. We got the deluxe that was supposed to come with a grill, and we've stated other KOAs that advertise a grill in the deluxe patio lots. Previously those other KOA locations actually had a gas grill, but this KOA had a slide around grate that went over the fire pit, not actually a grill so be prepared. The bathhouse room that I used had about a million bugs oddly plastered all over the ceiling and walls, I know it's camping but this was a little weird like some kind of bug massacre had occurred. But the bathhouse room itself was generously roomy and private, aside from the bugs it was very clean and well lit. Really enjoyed the music they were playing! There was a short nature walk to a small fishing pond and a really nice walk around the water of the sound that was beautiful. Our children are grown, and we didn't bring the furry children with this for this trip so we didn't check out any of those amenities, but they look nice and adequate for a family stay. Be prepared for the road in, it literally was not wide enough for our motorhome which is only a class c, so I wonder how folks with larger fifth wheels or class A's would even get down there lol. However, once there it was definitely worth it, and we definitely plan to Go back. Staff was super friendly, and very helpful 🙂
The road leading in is a little tight but do the speed limit, use caution and you’ll be fine. The grounds are always clean and staff friendly. Not a far drive to Duck/Corolla to go out on the beach and see the wild horses along with other nearby attractions. The views of the sound/water at night are pretty cool. It can get a little “buggy” so take your insect repellent.
We have been coming to this KOA for the past few years and have always had an excellent experience. This year had its challenges with a couple of our trips but am happy we finished our camping season strong with one of our best trips (Halloween Weekend) to date. The new leadership is putting in a lot of hard work and effort in making OBX West a major KOA destination. Their passion in providing a great customer experience really shows. We can't wait to come back next year and make more great family memories. Keep doing what y'all are doing!
3rd time we've come and stayed here for a gathering of friends. Always rented a cabin ,which has always been clean and comfortable, so I can't say about the rv hook ups. The staff have always been friendly and helpful. Being on the water makes for great sunrises and pleasant walks.
Very quiet (stayed Mon-Thurs), good customer service, clean facilities and great staff-Helpful and knowledgeable. Bathhouse was wonderful, well kept. Laundry functioned well and was clean. Propane fill up went as it should. Did not have a chance to try the water taxi or shuttle. It is a ways back to town, so stock up as needed. (The camp store has some stuff, but limited) Overall happy with our stay.
Lovely and clean with views of sunrise and sunset. Level sites. Our 45" fit just fine. Cabin and RV rentals. Playground, bouncing pillow, fishing, cafe, laundry, store, shower house, great dog Park. Friendly staff! Louise is cafe is a doll and Andy was so helpful with an RV question. Loved our week here.
Awesome place! Located in a small island in a remote location. Off the beaten path. Facility has almost everything you need. A local lady sells firewood cheap for the fire pits so we didn't even have to leave the island. Bought cool artwork from her and hit some local yard sales and made some new friends
We had a great week there. The staff was very friendly. It was clean and neat. Great for kids with a playground and bounce pad. The store was nice with delicious ice cream. We rented a golf cart because my husband has leg problems and can't walk far. It is a good size rv park. The wifi was not good and the rv lots were kind of tight. We didn't go in the busiest season so that didn't matter much. But I would go back and take my Dish Playmate next time.
Clean & relaxing campground. Grounds are kept well. And as for our grandchildren, they love the bouncy the playset and just the fact that they could run around and be a kid. We will be back. Thank you
