Welcome to Paddle Creek Horse Camp, a distinguished offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, specifically tailored for equestrians and outdoor enthusiasts seeking an authentic and immersive experience in Ohio's natural landscapes. Located within the scenic Wayne National Forest, near Ironton, Ohio, Paddle Creek Horse Camp serves as a vital hub for accessing the extensive Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System. This campground is not just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a gateway to miles of breathtaking trails and a unique connection with nature.
The environment at Paddle Creek Horse Camp is characterized by its expansive, level fields, meticulously mowed to provide ample space for trailers, horses, and campers. This open layout allows for easy maneuverability of large vehicles and provides comfortable surroundings for both two-legged and four-legged guests. Situated amidst the rolling hills of southern Ohio, the camp offers a diverse natural backdrop. Riders and hikers alike will traverse through varied vegetation, encountering open fields, brushland, mature forests, and young forests. The trails wind along dramatic rock cliffs, past serene waterfalls, alongside babbling streams, and atop picturesque ridge tops, offering a constantly changing panorama of Ohio's striking landscapes. The area is home to numerous species of wildlife, providing opportunities for observation and a deeper connection with the wilderness. While the primary focus is equestrian, the trails are also open to hikers, allowing them to explore the same beautiful scenery. The camp is set in a relatively secluded area, offering a sense of peace and tranquility, though it's important to note that cell coverage can be limited or nonexistent in some parts, requiring campers to truly disconnect and embrace the outdoors.
As a service provider within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Paddle Creek Horse Camp offers essential amenities and services designed to cater to the needs of its unique clientele. The camp is open year-round for camping, providing flexibility for visitors. While the horse riding trails are seasonally closed from winter to early spring, typically from December 15 to April 15, the campground itself remains accessible for camping and hiking throughout the year. For horseback riders, the camp provides some hitching rails, allowing for convenient tethering of horses. With a capacity for approximately 100 people and their horses, it can accommodate a significant number of visitors, yet maintains a sense of spaciousness. In terms of facilities, Paddle Creek Horse Camp offers primitive camping options, accommodating both tent camping and camping trailers. There is one vault toilet available on-site for restroom facilities. It's crucial for visitors to be aware that potable water is not available at the campground, and electricity and showers are not provided, emphasizing its rustic and natural camping experience. However, a dump station is available on the way into the area, near the main Lake Vesuvius area, for those with RVs. The camp is operated by the Ironton Ranger District of the Wayne National Forest, ensuring that it is well-maintained and adheres to forest service guidelines.
One of the key features of Paddle Creek Horse Camp is its direct integration into the Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System, a comprehensive network spanning 46.66 miles. This system comprises nine distinct trails, four trailheads, and Paddle Creek Horse Camp itself as the primary horse campground. The trails are clearly marked with gray diamonds, with different colored dots indicating various loops, making navigation straightforward for riders and hikers. The trail ratings range from moderate to challenging, offering options for riders of varying skill levels. This extensive trail system allows for diverse riding experiences, from leisurely trots through open woods to more exhilarating rides along rugged terrain. The ability to plan routes using a map of the trail system and a chart of loops, distances, and start/end points further enhances the user experience, allowing for customized adventures. Furthermore, day and night access (with lights) is permitted on the trails, offering unique opportunities for evening rides. For those seeking even more adventure, connector trails allow access to additional trails in the nearby Dean State Forest.
Regarding promotional information, Paddle Creek Horse Camp stands out for its accessibility and affordability. Notably, there are no fees required for camping at Paddle Creek Horse Camp, making it a highly attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a free, yet well-maintained, primitive camping experience. This no-fee policy, combined with its year-round open status for camping, positions it as a valuable resource for outdoor enthusiasts. The camp’s relatively high usage, described as "medium," suggests its popularity among the equestrian community and other campers who appreciate its natural setting and direct trail access. While reservations are not available, its capacity for 100 people and horses generally means there’s ample space, especially during off-peak times. For those interested in planning their trip, the camp is located near Ironton, Ohio, and detailed directions are readily available from the Forest Service. Promotional materials highlight the stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and the unique opportunity to ride or hike through areas featuring rock cliffs, waterfalls, streams, and varied forest types. It's a prime location for those who desire a quiet, immersive outdoor experience without the frills of more developed campgrounds. Visitors are encouraged to check bulletin boards upon arrival for any current fire bans or other important updates, ensuring a safe and enjoyable stay. Campfires are permitted with specific restrictions, including a 10-foot clearance and a rock ring, and must be extinguished before leaving. Bonfires are not allowed, and cutting standing or green trees is prohibited. These regulations are in place to preserve the natural environment and ensure the safety of all campers. Overall, Paddle Creek Horse Camp offers an exceptional and accessible opportunity for local users to explore the beauty of Wayne National Forest on horseback or on foot, embodying the true spirit of outdoor adventure within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category.

Customer Reviews
Nice quiet free horse camp with lots of great trails. My only dislike: Driveway splits into two paths and neither have much of a loop at end to turn a trailer around on. But that may not be an issue for others with better trailer maneuvering skills!
Paddle Creek has an outhouse for amenities and a running Creek. Natural setting, I'm sure horse folk would live it. Off the beaten path and miles of backpacking trails at hand.
A quiet, free campground. The entrance looks like you are pulling into a driveway so don't be alarmed. A beautiful place to stay.
Nice location however be careful here. The gravel road to the camp is narrow and bigger rigs will have to pull over when someone approaches from the other direction. No cell service for t mobile
Primitive horse camp. There is a brick building with one port-a-potty. Most sites offer shade, however, there is a field at the start of camp that is primarily sun. Typically used for day riders, but can be used for overnight camping. High lines & tie stalls. There is a creek that has always provided enough water for the horses to drink from, even in the middle of summer. Both the Paddle Creek Loop & the S & T connectors for the Kimble Loop are accessible from camp.
