Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For local USese individuals with a Department of Defense (DoD) ID card who are planning travel within the United States and seeking a peaceful camping experience, Peregrine Pines Air Force Academy FamCamp, located at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado, offers a unique option within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. It's important to note upfront that this campground is primarily for DoD ID card holders.
Customer reviews describe Peregrine Pines as a "very peaceful campground" situated in a natural environment. The campsites are noted as being "nice level sites with plenty of room between other campers," providing a comfortable and spacious camping experience. For nature lovers, the campground offers a "wonderful" setting with a pleasant walking trail. A unique feature mentioned is the proximity to train tracks, where you might be able to wave at passing train conductors.
Being located on the Air Force Academy base provides a significant advantage: access to various base services and amenities. These include a bowling alley, commissary (a military grocery store), BX (Base Exchange, a department store), gas station, Class XI (military supplies), hiking trails, and more. This makes it a convenient location with more resources than typical campgrounds.
Peregrine Pines is also strategically located close to major attractions in the area, with the Garden of the Gods being specifically mentioned. This allows campers to easily explore popular local sights.
Reservations are consistently highlighted as "a must" due to the campground being very busy. It is strongly advised to "book in advance" to secure a site. One reviewer mentioned not being allowed to arrive a day early, indicating the importance of adhering to reservation dates.
In terms of amenities at the campsites, reviews mention solid 50-amp electricity. However, it's crucial to be aware of high water pressure (reported as 120 psi at the faucet), so bringing a water pressure valve is recommended to protect your RV or camping equipment. While some noise from trains and planes was noted, reviewers generally reported sleeping well.
While Peregrine Pines is not described as a resort, it offers a great value ("you can't beat for the price") for those eligible to stay. If you hold a DoD ID card and appreciate a peaceful, nature-filled campground with access to various services and proximity to attractions, Peregrine Pines Air Force Academy FamCamp is highly recommended. Remember to make reservations well in advance due to its popularity.

We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed them all. Nice level site with plenty of room between other campers. If you love being in nature this campground is wonderful. Nice walking trail and if you want to explore a little you can walk down to the train tracks and wave at the train conductor as he passes by. He waved back :D. Speaking of the train, the train noise was barely noticeable from our site. Since this is on the Air Force Academy base you have access to all of the services there. Bowling alley, commissary, BX, gas, Class XI, hiking and such. Located close to all major attractions in the area (Garden of the Gods). This is not a resort but a very peaceful campground that you can't beat for the price..if you can get reservations. Please book in advance.
Nice camp ground, reservations are a must. We planned for two nights, but were not allowed to arrive a day early...very busy. Good space between sites, trees are plentiful and out of the way for RV movement. We rented a fire pit, but then had T-storms and rain, so we couldn't use. Bad timing on our part. No issues on electricity, solid 50 amps, but high water pressure, bring your pressure valve (120 psi at faucet). Trains and planes were heard, but we slept great both nights. Highly recommended for DoD ID card holders.
Nice clean campground with no frills. Staff are terrific and friendly. Some sites can be a little too close together - especially if you and your neighbors have big rigs. Really convenient location with lots of things to do close by. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here!
We booked a last-minute overnight stay here and it was fantastic. Not crazy about the fact that nobody answers the phone when you call, but it was otherwise great. It is pretty and full of trees, and the sites are so spread out that you couldn't be bothered by a neighbor if you tried. Super clean and very few flies or bugs. Definitely going back.
WOW!! Been a lot of places but this is my favorite. Love the sites and the location. Tons of hiking on this AFB. Easy to ride my bike and 2 miles to the gym!! I would recommend this location to anyone who can visit. Garden of the gods is nearby, and the Manitou incline is also really close both worth seeing while you’re here. Laundry was a bit expensive at two dollars per wash and dry each. But the machine seem to be in good order and newish.
We stayed here two nights during the middle of the week. The grounds are clean and have fun, quirky decorations. The noise from the highway and trains is muffled so quite tolerable. The office staff are kind and welcoming - so friendly! We used the Academy fitness center; it is clean and large. Excellent equipment. I visited the optical shop - thanks to the FamCamp office staff for helping me get there. They adjusted my glasses for me - thanks!
