Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite Introduce
For Wisconsin outdoor enthusiasts seeking a truly unique and secluded escape, the Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite in Crivitz, WI, offers an unforgettable island camping experience. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of the river, surrounded by water and dense foliage, with nothing but nature for miles. It’s a place where privacy, raw beauty, and genuine solitude are the main attractions, making it a perfect retreat for those looking to truly disconnect.
What makes the Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite so special is its exclusive accessibility by watercraft – be it a fishing boat, jetboat, or kayak. The Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite is located in Crivitz, WI 54114, USA. This places it within Marinette County, a region celebrated for its extensive waterways, including the Peshtigo River, and vast natural areas. While the address provides a general location in Crivitz, it's crucial to understand that these are specific, water-accessible island campsites, not a traditional roadside campground.
Access to these unique campsites is exclusively by boat or kayak. Visitors typically launch their watercraft and navigate the Peshtigo River to reach their chosen island site. Reviews indicate that it is "best to come in through the North side" of the river, as other areas can be very shallow with a lot of plant growth. A "fishing boat, jetboat, or kayak is best," and campers should be prepared for potential seaweed in the water, requiring them to "trim up and be prepared to clean out the seaweed." This boat-in access ensures a secluded experience, with sites like "Honkers Hideaway" and "Eagles Nest" sharing an island but being "not close enough to interfere with each other and offers a lot of privacy." Eagles Nest even has a small dock for easier landing, while other landings might be sandbars. This method of access contributes significantly to the unique, adventurous character of these campsites, making it an ideal choice for Wisconsin locals with their own watercraft and a desire for a truly off-grid experience.
The Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite offers a primitive, wilderness-type camping experience, with amenities focused on the essentials for an off-grid stay. The services reflect its secluded, boat-in nature.
- Island Camping Sites: The primary service is the provision of unique, private camping sites located on islands within the Peshtigo River. These sites are strategically placed to offer maximum privacy. Specific sites mentioned include "Honkers Hideaway" and "Eagles Nest."
- Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, allowing campers to build safe fires for cooking, warmth, and ambiance. Campers are advised to "Bring...fire wood!" as it is not provided on the island.
- Clearing for Tents: Sites offer a large, cleared area suitable for pitching multiple tents, providing ample space for groups or families.
- Ground Toilet: A basic "toilet in the ground" (likely a pit toilet or thunderbox) is provided at the sites. Campers are reminded to "Bring toilet paper!" as this is not supplied.
- Water Access (Peshtigo River): The campsite provides direct access to the Peshtigo River. While the river offers cold, clear water (some reviewers mention "Best ice water I've ever had" for cooling off or filtering), campers should bring their own drinking water or be prepared to purify river water.
- Boat/Kayak Landings: Sites generally feature a sandbar landing for boats and kayaks, with one site (Eagles Nest) reportedly having a small dock for easier access.
- Fishing Opportunities: The Peshtigo River is renowned for its excellent fishing, and these campsites offer prime access for targeting various species. The river's flowages are known for smallmouth bass, musky, walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish.
- Seclusion and Privacy: A key "service" is the inherent privacy offered by these boat-in island sites, ensuring a tranquil and undisturbed camping experience away from crowds.
- No Motors (implied for small river sections): While not explicitly a "no motors" rule for the entire Peshtigo, the type of access (kayak, fishing boat) and the nature of the river in these areas suggest a quieter, less motorized experience, though some weekend boating activity can occur.
The Peshtigo River Kayak Campsite stands out with several distinct features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for adventurous Wisconsin campers.

- Primitive, Authentic Camping: For those who appreciate raw camping, the basic amenities (fire ring, clearing for tents, ground toilet) are highlights. It encourages self-reliance and a true "back to basics" experience, appealing to seasoned outdoors enthusiasts.
- Unique "Spider Thunderbox": The quirky mention of a "spider thunderbox" adds a touch of rustic charm and suggests a well-maintained, albeit primitive, toilet facility.
- Navigational Challenge and Reward: The advice to "Get familiar with the water depth because it does fluctuate quite a bit" and warnings about shallow water and plant growth highlight a minor challenge that, once overcome, leads to a rewarding and unique camping spot.
- Weekend Boating Activity: While generally secluded, the awareness that "weekends during the summer get a little busy with boating during the day" is a factual highlight, preparing campers for potential daytime activity while still ensuring quiet evenings.

Awesome island! Rocks absolutely rocked. Probably igneous, but I'm not a rock surgeon. Best ice water I've ever had. Brats were tasty, not so sure about Tanner's "cheese biscuit"... Spider thunderbox makes me feel safe.
We camped at Honkers Hideaway which shares the island with the Eagles nest. Don't worry, they're not close enough to interfere with each other and offers a lot of privacy. Be warned though, these sites are only accessible by boat or kayak. The landings are a sand bar except eagles nest which has a small dock. It is best to come in through the North side as the water is very shallow and has a lot of plant growth. A fishing boat, jetboat, or kayak is best. Otherwise trim up and be prepared to clean out the seaweed. The site offers a fire ring, a large clearing for tents, and a toilet in the ground. Bring toilet paper and fire wood! The weekends during the summer get a little busy with boating during the day, and is great for fishing outside peak boating hours. Get familiar with the water depth because it does fluctuate quite a bit. I highly recommend this site and area, it was really unique!
