The campground is a haven for nature lovers, offering numerous hiking trails that wind through the wooded areas. These trails provide opportunities to explore the diverse ecosystem, including sightings of butterflies, songbirds, chipmunks, red squirrels, loons, owls, hawks, and even a large female garter snake. The abundance of milkweed plants along the paths adds to the natural beauty of the area.

For fishing enthusiasts, Petaga Campground is strategically located near fishing spots, with a fish cleaning shelter available on-site. The swimming pond is another highlight, where campers can enjoy cooling off in the water while spotting leopard and pickerel frogs. While salamanders were not spotted during the review period, the presence of toads and various amphibians indicates a thriving ecosystem.

Wildlife is abundant at Petaga Campground, with raccoons and bears frequently visiting the area. It's essential for campers to store food securely in vehicles to avoid attracting these scavengers, as leaving food out can lead to raids by both raccoons and bears. Customer reviews highlight the campground's spacious and shaded sites, with one camper noting that while mosquitoes and horse flies were present in mid July, they brought their own repellent and head nets to handle the situation. This looks to be a great campground. It is well spread out with many large secluded, shaded, and fairly spacious sites. It has many camper cabins, walk in sites, as well as a fish cleaning shelter. The road is paved to help campground and is on the way tonthe day use area. There are many trials in the area.

We camped here for 3 nights in one of the electric site in mid July. We prescouted which site we wanted before reserving it online. At this time of the year, mosquitoes and horse flies are in full bloom. We brought plenty of spray repellent. Unless you were sprayed head to toe, they will find a spot to draculate your blood. The wooded trails would've been very nice to walk or hike through but we would've came out like we just lost a fighting match so we passed on the opportunity. Next time we will bring mosquitoe head nets. The area is very wooded and natural, very beautiful place. Lots of wildlife, we saw a few types of butterflies, many kinds of songs birds, chipmunks, red squirrels, loons, owls, hawks, a very large female garter snake, toads and lots of leopard and pickerel frogs at the swimming pond. Surprisingly I didn't see any salamanders, though I wasn't intentionally looking for them but was hoping to see one or two wandering around in the early mornings or late evenings of the moist forest floor. Very nice to see milkweeds along the roads and path too. There are definitely scavengers roaming at night. Our first time camping in the north so it's our fault, we were unprepared for them the first night and left food out in the netted tent. Had racoons and bears came through and raided some of our food. After that night, all food was locked away in the truck. The racoons did come back the 2nd night but left quickly after not finding anything to eat. The bear didn't come by our site but can definitely hear it trying to go through the dumpster because we were close and can see the dumpsters. The shower building was very well kepted up. I think they cleaned it 2-3x a day. Shower water were nice a warm but the water however seems to be very hard just by tasting it and is slightly stained. Visually it is undesirable but safe of course. We were lucky the week we stayed was cooler, temps never really made it past 79 degrees and nights were cool in the upper 50's and low 60's. Made for a very comfortable night.

The campsites are great lots of room. Not tightly packed in. The restrooms are decent. We loved our site and want to come back. It seems like such a large area to camp at!

Had a great time camping with my dog here. Site was fairly private, near restrooms. Park was clean and not as full as the reservation site said it was.

Loved site 70! A bit close to the cabin spots and sound travels when the leaves are off the trees the fall, so nothing too bothersome. Hunting noises were a bit of a neusance, but we were still able to enjoy every moment! Bathrooms and garbage nearby with some nice easy hiking along the river! Great spot to bring our puppy on his first camping trip!
