Fantastic getaway in a peaceful and pristine setting. Fishing in Pillar Lake is above-average. We have stayed in cabins 4, 7, and 10 - each one was cozy, rustic and fairly well equipped. #7 has a great patio. #10 has huge bay windows that look over the lake and you can open right up. Ignore the 1-star reviews...unless you have extremely high expectations. The key word is RUSTIC. This place is not the Hilton. The cabins are by no means spotless or modern...but we never expected that anyway. All cabins have great views of lake. Woodstoves provide nice warmth and ambiance. The manager and caretakers are all super friendly and went out of their way to help us. We will definitely be back!
Many terrible reviews I see and all honest so I am glad now that I did not waste my money and book here. Was about to for June. A big shame that some owners are gross and cannot just keep places up to normal standards! They lost me!
We camped here with our family. Used 3 tent sights total, 1 of which had electricity. Before we entered the site, we were optimistic for our experience as the website claims offered swimming, trails, horseshoe toss, and a convenience store. The website does not have any pictures of the tent sites, but basing our assumptions on the images of the cabins, we had high hopes for this campsite. Upon arrival we were hit with major disappointment. Before we came to our individual sites, we checked in at the front desk. There were two young girls (guessing aged 12 and 14) who gave us a map after we paid, no adults in sight. When we found our sites, we were honestly appalled. One of the three sites was legitimately 4 feet by 8 feet in size and consisted of nothing other than 4 feet tall grass and was hard tod determine what was road and what was campsite. This site was also directly next to a busy highway with a small wired fence between the site and the highway. The second site was directly behind these smelly and unkept outhouses. The third site which had electricity, looked ok but was extremely lumpy and uneven. We went back to the 14 year old and asked for a change of sites which was no problem. We found two alternative sites similar to the third site but just as lumpy and uneven. We also found a tonne of trash in all 3 sites. After settling in we noticed two RV sites with German Shepherd dogs. This was disappointing as the website clearly states no dogs over 20 Lbs and they barked often. We were excited to have pillar lake so we walked to the lake shore and yet again disappointed. There was a patch of opening in the grass to step in, but found several leaches, many many wasps, and snakes. And the dock is something out of a horror movie. As we walked towards the edge of the dock it would start sinking into the lake until submerging fully. The ladder at the edge of the lake was falling apart. Thankfully the water was perfect temperature and leaches didn't go out that far. The one thing that shocked us the most is that there were no bears. The garbages were Tupperware container style with a flimsy lid, and garbages were changed once in the seven days we were there. Our entire stay we did not see a single adult or even staff member of any age to maintain the campsite. The showers were ok, but the men's shower had someones personal items on the shower shelves which was odd. The lake is the only safe and clean lake in the area. The best parts of our trip were the loons on the lake, the many birds including eagles flying around, and the domesticated cats who run into your tents in the morning looking for food. We decided on two stars for this site because the cats were cute and the lake was nice, so a generous 2 stars tbh. TLDR: Website is misleading, sites were ridiculous and sad, they don't enforce any rules and no staff around to maintain the campground. Lake is great once you get past the sketchy dock.
I have been coming to Pillal lake on and off ever since 1981. Has always been a great experience from tenting ,to renting cabins. This year wasn't so great, the washrooms were dirty , cob webs all over , shower stall dirty , Toilet paper on the floor, garbage not dumped , wouldn't step foot into the out house , the cob webs everywhere. Doesn't take much to go wipe them out. And they never once came around to collect garbage from cans. It wasn't even busy when we got there and stayed like that till the day before we left. So sad to see it like this. Please clean it up . Such a shame . Wouldn't even rate but because I know what it can be, I am giving 2 stars.
This is an honest review for the resort and my comments are echoed in other reviews within the past year. I have been to Pillar lake a number of times but have not been in the last couple of years, until August 2024. To say that it is getting worse each year is an understatement. Most, if not all of the cabins have been around for 50 years (except for the owners cabin) and there has not be a single upgrade or renovation done in all the time that I have been going. Some of the floors are rotten, some windows are broken and replaced with plywood, the beds are old and dirty and safety features like hand rails are rotten, and the list goes on. I understand that you should do your research before you go but take the time to read the Google reviews. Most of them are from years ago which give the resort higher ratings however the most recent ones are lower ratings and confirm what I have said in this review. There is new management (they are not the owners) at the resort who are friendly and doing what they can to keep up with the repairs and such but the resort needs a major renovations that will take years to do. This is a beautiful location and it would certainly be nice to see if brought back to a better state than it is now.
