**Introduction / Overview: Camping Under the Giants of the Northwoods**
For Minnesotans, few destinations hold as much historical and natural significance as **Itasca State Park**, the revered home of the **Mississippi River Headwaters**. Nestled within this 32,000-acre sanctuary of old-growth pines is the popular **Pine Ridge Campground**, a fantastic place that offers an ideal blend of rugged nature and modern convenience. This campground is aptly named, as guests are surrounded by **"tall pines"** that create a peaceful, shaded, and truly Northwoods atmosphere.
Pine Ridge is a large, developed campground that caters exceptionally well to families, RV owners, and first-time campers alike. It is recognized for being **dog-friendly** and featuring amenities like a nearby **playground** for children, making it a perfect spot for a multi-generational outing. Unlike more rustic State Park options, Pine Ridge offers many sites with **electric hookups** and easy access to modern facilities, including clean restrooms and hot showers. The consensus among local users is clear: this is a lovely, peaceful place that provides an excellent base camp for exploring the park’s many attractions, including the opportunity to wade across the beginning of one of the world's greatest rivers. **Location and Accessibility: Near the Historic Headwaters**
Pine Ridge Campground is located directly inside the boundary of **Itasca State Park**, near **Shevlin, MN 56676, USA**, placing it strategically in the heart of Minnesota's north-central lake country. This location is key, as the campground is situated in the main recreation area of the park, ensuring visitors are never "too far from the park’s main attractions," including the iconic Headwaters of the Mississippi River.
The campground’s accessibility is a major highlight, catering to vehicles of all sizes. The roads leading to and within the loops are **well-marked**, and parking is designed for **easy access** close to each campsite. This is a significant advantage for those hauling trailers or large RVs up to **60 feet** in length. While you are deep in the woods, the main Itasca park road provides a smooth connection to Highway 71, making the drive from points south and north straightforward. For visitors to the area, Pine Ridge is often noted for its convenience in reaching key interpretive sites, the visitor center, and rental facilities, allowing for maximum recreation time and minimal travel hassle within the park boundaries.

**What is Worth Choosing: The Headwaters Adventure and State Park Quality**
For a Minnesota resident, choosing Pine Ridge Campground is about securing a spot at the **most historically and geographically significant State Park in the entire state**, without sacrificing comfort. It is supremely worth choosing for two main reasons. First, it offers **unmatched, convenient access to the Mississippi Headwaters**, giving campers the unique opportunity to walk across the very beginning of the continent's great river—a quintessential Minnesota experience.
Second, the campground's **high standard of maintenance and amenities** is reliable. The clean, well-maintained restrooms and showers, the availability of electric hookups, and the spacious, forested sites ensure a pleasant stay for everyone, from tent campers to RV users. While there's a thrilling reminder of the wilderness in the occasional **bear sighting** (as one reviewer humorously noted), the overall experience is one of peace and safety. Pine Ridge Campground provides the perfect balance of rugged beauty and essential comfort, making it the premier choice for families looking to create lasting memories in the magnificent, historic heart of the Minnesota Northwoods.

Just got back from a weekend at Pine Ridge Campground in Itasca State Park, and honestlyI really liked it! I’d rate the whole experience around 4.5/5 🌲⛺️ The view is beautiful, you’re surrounded by tall pines and it feels peaceful and secluded, but not too far from the park’s main attractions. The access is easy, with well-marked roads and parking close to each campsite. Great for both first-timers and experienced campers. There’s a nice little playground nearby, perfect if you’re camping with kids. Restrooms were clean and well-maintained, which is always a relief. It’s also dog-friendly! I saw a few families with their pups enjoying the trails and just hanging around the campsite. The picnic areas were super handy too, flat, shaded, and equipped with sturdy tables and fire pits. Now here’s the plot twist of the trip: while I was sleeping soundly, there was apparently a bear that came and rummaged through the trash we hadn’t thrown out yet 😅🧸🗑️ It didn’t bother anyone, but it definitely messed up the garbage bag near our tent. Sooo… take this as a tip—make sure to dispose of all your trash before bed! Not a bad experience at all, actually kinda thrilling 😂 But still, better to be safe and avoid attracting wildlife. All in all, Pine Ridge is a lovely, peaceful place to camp. Would totally go again if I have a chance. and next time, I’ll double-check that the trash is gone before lights out! 😂
Nice campground with decent restrooms and showers. Sites are reasonably level. The firepits are a poor design, uneven, and not practical for actual grilling over a fire. Would be nice if more trails were connected.
This is a great place to camp with the Family! The bathrooms are clean with plenty of hot water!
A nice campground at Itasca State Park. It was easy to park our camper and pur spot had great hammocking trees. Clean bathrooms, campground was busy and people were having fun, and DNR staff was very friendly. Make sure to get your spot right away (the 120 days before) cause this park is very popular.
A solid camp ground with large shade trees that is very affordable. Bathrooms and showers are good. Trails are paved and you can walk across the Mississippi river! The bike shop had a bike inner tube, which was very convenient!
