It's a bit smaller than I expected but beautiful views. I was there on a Monday, so there was only one couple fishing and a family just sort of hanging out. I would give it 5 stars, but the pay kiosk is out of order. So you have to pay at the Carter Lake entrance which is 10 miles back from where I came from. The ranger there said the kiosk has been broken for " a long time". That would have been nice to know before I had to drive 10 miles back to the Carter lake entrance and then 10 miles back to Pinewood.
Gorgeous reservoir and the host was amazing! Very quiet and mostly clean. There is a lot of broken glass on the beaches. No swimming, can only go in up to your knees due to a very strong under current. Fun to paddle board or kayak as long as you stay mostly in the middle. Gets challenging if you head to the dam and dangerous whirlpool that's roped off on the other side. Nice hiking trails on the other side of the dam and our neighbor campers caught tons of fish!
Pinewood is my new favorite campground! It was so pretty, and the rangers and service was fantastic! Can't wait to go back when it is warm enough to paddle board. It is a STEEP grade to get there, but the road is good, and had no issues towing up in the snow! There is ZERO cell signal for T-mobile, but luckily the reservation system had let us know that the water was closed for the season, and where we could fill up on the way.
My children took me kayaking there. I had a wonderful time. We had a cook out provided by my son.
Kinda like a little get away. Just past the crazyness of Carter Lake you find a little reprieve from humanity. You'll find No cell service, very dark night and a small camp ground. The muti-use dog friendly ( on a leash) 3.0 mile loop trail has some off shoots that could make it a 5.2 mile trail with minimal elevation gain and an easy walk with stunning views. This reservoir serves as a battery for the Bureau of Reclamation power plant down the hill. Great for fishing, SUP, kayaking and bird watching. There is an Osprey nest on an old telephone pole towards the south side of the lake. No swimming or motorized boats allowed. Just a great little spot not many people know about.
