Pipes Campground Introduce
Pipes Campground, situated in Angelus Oaks, CA 92305, falls under the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, though its current state is significantly impacted by the Lake Fire from several years ago. It is important to note that this campground offers a primitive camping experience, and its facilities are not in typical working order.
According to customer reviews, the campground sustained substantial damage during the Lake Fire. The bathrooms are reduced to concrete slabs with ashes and rusty nails, and the surrounding area is overgrown. While picnic tables are present, the overall condition of the campground is deteriorated.
Furthermore, the trail that previously allowed hikers to travel from Pioneertown Mountain Preserve to Pipes Canyon and onto Onyx Summit is currently closed. Pipes Road, which was once a part of this route, is now inaccessible due to a large closed gate near Onyx Summit.
Despite the damage, Pipes Campground remains a viable option for primitive camping due to the presence of Pipes Spring, which provides a water source. Reviews indicate that even in late April and mid-July, there was clear, cool running water available. However, campers should be prepared for a wilderness experience with minimal facilities.
Key considerations for Pipes Campground:
- Primitive camping: Limited to no functional facilities.
- Impacted by Lake Fire: Resulting in deteriorated infrastructure.
- Closed trail: Hiking access to surrounding areas is restricted.
- Pipes Spring: Provides a natural water source.
- Wildlife: Potential for encounters with wildlife, such as black bears.
Therefore, Pipes Campground is best suited for experienced campers seeking a remote, primitive camping experience and who are prepared for the lack of amenities and potential wildlife encounters. Visitors should be aware of the campground's current state and plan accordingly.

Customer Reviews
Pipes Campground burned down in the Lake fire a few years ago. The bathrooms are just concrete slabs with ashes and rusty nails. There are a few picnic tables there, but everything is overgrown around them. The trail there is closed. Before the fire you could hike from Pioneertown Mountain Preserve to Pipes Canyon and then take the untainted Pipes Road on to Onyx Summit. There is a large closed gate closing Pipes road near Onyx Summit. If you somehow end up there, it is still a good place for primitive camping because of nearby Pipes Spring. When I was there in Late April of 2019 there was clear cool running water here. Follow up: In mid-July of this year there was still water in Pipes Spring. I was able to scoop and filter 6 litters with no waiting. I spent the night there and saw a small black bear in the morning.
