Plomosa Road BLM Camping Area Campground Quartzsite Introduce
For Arizonans seeking the ultimate freedom of dispersed camping, the Plomosa Road BLM Camping Area in Quartzsite, AZ, offers an expansive and incredibly popular destination. Located just a few miles north of the bustling RV hub of Quartzsite, this Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land provides a vast open desert landscape perfect for boondocking. It’s a place where you can truly get away from it all, enjoying the quiet solitude of the Arizona desert under wide-open skies.
Unlike traditional campgrounds with defined sites and extensive amenities, Plomosa Road BLM Camping Area embodies the spirit of self-sufficient camping. It’s known for its "desert pavement" and ample space, allowing visitors to spread out and enjoy a sense of privacy. While it can become quite busy, especially during the famous Quartzsite RV show season, it generally maintains a peaceful atmosphere where "people keep to themselves mostly." This area is a cornerstone of the Arizona desert camping experience, particularly for RVers who are equipped for off-grid living.
The appeal of Plomosa Road lies in its accessibility, its cost-free nature, and the raw beauty of the Sonoran Desert. For any Arizonan looking to embrace the minimalist camping lifestyle, enjoy stunning desert views, and experience the unique community that forms around Quartzsite during peak season, this BLM area is an essential stop.
The Plomosa Road BLM Camping Area is specifically located around 40617-40703 Plomosa Rd, Quartzsite, AZ 85346, USA. This places it directly within the heart of La Paz County, Arizona, a region synonymous with winter RVing and desert exploration. Crucially, it is situated "a few miles north of Quartzsite," a small town that transforms into one of the largest RV gatherings in the world during the cooler months, primarily from November to March.
For Arizonans traveling from various parts of the state, such as Phoenix, Tucson, or Yuma, accessing Plomosa Road is straightforward via Interstate 10. Quartzsite is a major RV destination on I-10, and Plomosa Road is a well-known exit and access point just north of the town. The roads leading into the dispersed camping areas from Plomosa Road are typically unpaved but generally well-maintained and passable for most RVs and vehicles, though conditions can vary, especially after heavy rains.
The proximity to Quartzsite is a significant advantage. While offering a "less crowded" feel than areas immediately adjacent to town, campers at Plomosa Road are still just a short drive away from Quartzsite's various services, including grocery stores, RV supply shops, laundromats, and the massive annual RV shows and swap meets. This blend of remote desert tranquility and convenient access to town amenities makes Plomosa Road BLM Camping Area highly practical and appealing for local Arizonans seeking a self-sufficient outdoor experience.
- Dispersed Camping: Plomosa Road is primarily a dispersed camping area, meaning there are no designated campsites, formal facilities, or services provided. Campers choose their own spot within the allowed areas, fostering a sense of freedom and solitude.
- 14-Day Stay Limit (Generally): As with many BLM dispersed camping areas, there is typically a 14-day stay limit within any 28-day period. This regulation encourages turnover and ensures equitable use of public lands. Visitors should always check current BLM regulations for specific Long Term Visitor Areas (LTVAs) if applicable, or general dispersed camping rules.
- Quiet and Peaceful Environment: Reviews consistently highlight the area as "peaceful and quiet," especially outside of the peak RV show season. This is a key "service" for those seeking a tranquil desert experience.
- Ample Space: The area offers "lots of desert pavement" and is described as "huge," providing abundant space for campers to spread out and enjoy privacy, even when busy.
- Accessibility for Large RVs: The open, relatively flat desert terrain makes it well-suited for large recreational vehicles and trailers, which are prevalent in this area during the winter months.
- Designated Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA - nearby/related): While Plomosa Road itself is primarily dispersed camping, it's very close to or sometimes considered part of the broader LTVA system managed by the BLM around Quartzsite. LTVAs offer longer stay limits (up to 7 months) for a fee and provide limited amenities like vault toilets and trash disposal. Campers at Plomosa Road should be aware of LTVA boundaries and specific regulations if considering longer stays or minimal amenities.
- Sunrise and Sunset Views: While not a service, the wide-open desert landscape inherently offers spectacular sunrise and sunset views, a primary draw for many desert campers.
- Wildlife Viewing (Implicit): The natural desert environment provides opportunities for observing local desert wildlife, from various bird species to small mammals.
- True Boondocking Experience: The primary highlight is the opportunity for authentic boondocking (dry camping), where campers are completely self-sufficient. This appeals to those who enjoy off-grid living and the challenge of managing their own resources.
- Vast Open Desert Landscape: The expansive "desert pavement" offers panoramic views of the Arizona desert, with stunning vistas of distant mountains and wide-open skies, perfect for stargazing and photography.
- Proximity to Quartzsite: Despite its dispersed nature, the campground is just a few miles north of Quartzsite. This proximity is invaluable, providing easy access to the town's services, including water, propane, dump stations, groceries, and the famous annual RV shows and swap meets.
- Seasonal Vibrancy: The area comes alive during the winter months, especially from November to March, coinciding with the Quartzsite RV show. While it "grows to be busy," this also means a unique sense of community forms, with fellow RVers sharing tips and stories.
- Peaceful and Quiet (Outside Peak Season): Even during busier times, the large area allows for finding relatively quiet spots. Outside of the major show, it becomes truly "peaceful and quiet," offering serene solitude.
- Cost-Effective Camping: As BLM dispersed camping, there are typically no fees for staying within the standard 14-day limit, making it a highly economical option for extended stays.
- Stargazing Opportunities: Away from city lights, the desert sky at Plomosa Road offers incredible stargazing opportunities, with clear views of constellations and the Milky Way.
- Ideal for Self-Contained RVs: The environment is perfectly suited for self-contained RVs with solar setups, generators, and large fresh/grey/black water tanks, allowing for comfortable multi-day stays without external hookups.

Please note: As a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) dispersed camping area, there isn't a direct phone number for the "campground" itself. For inquiries about regulations, conditions, or the larger Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA) system, you would typically contact the local BLM office. For Quartzsite, this would be the Lake Havasu Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management.
Lake Havasu Field Office (BLM): (928) 718-3700 (This is a general contact for BLM operations in the region that oversees areas like Plomosa Road and the nearby LTVAs).

Great dispersed area (check for special LTVA regulations) generally a 14-day limit. Lots of desert pavement, people keep to themselves mostly. This area is a few miles north of Quartzite and a bit less crowded.
A beautiful place to boondock. Peaceful and quiet. Grows to be busy during the RV tent show.. and they quiets down again.
A large area of BLM land where you can camp for 14 days. There are no fees, no registration, and no host. From the time you exit the highway until the sign that says day use only ( at approximately 2.6 miles ) you can camp on either side of the road for up to 14 days. Plomosa Rd is paved. There are dirt roads off of Plomosa rd that lead to large rock parking areas. There are large rocks and random fire rings everywhere. 2wd low clearance ok just watch for random large rocks and wash outs. I found a great spot near the trees at 2.5 miles on the left. Arriving at night is not advised. It is very hard to tell where to go at night. Roads are not marked. You can literally camp anywhere up to the day use only signs on Plomosa Rd. Very nice clean area.
One of my favorite boondocking areas. Beautiful sunsets, cool mountain views and great hiking. A bit of noise from the road but it isn’t too busy.
A great place to camp, RV, or boondocking. No resources unless you bring them with you. Close shopping Gas and restaurants Excellent bike trails.
