We stayed at this campsite for to do some biking and hiking. The campsites were nice. They had plenty of trees for privacy and were pretty level. The provided picnic tables were in great condition. The campground is pretty segregated with the upfront sites mostly being RV and the back sites were tents only. The bathrooms were in decent condition. The 2 shower stalls were very basic, but they had hot water and good pressure. We got no cell signal with Verizon, so make sure you have all your plans in place before arriving at camp. There won't be much looking up information or maps when you're there.
Poinsett State Park is a hidden gem located in Sumter County. It’s actually just down the road from us and a place we’ve camped at for many years. We ‘ve had fun with friends there snd even brought our grandsons along many times. We took a ride out there yesterday and it’s really gorgeous in the fall. Be sure to check out the coquina stone too.
Great quiet campground. The sites do get a little flooded when it rains but it dissipates quickly. We had our firewood bin stolen from our campsite while we were gone (something we’ve done a million times before) and the camp host, Steve, helped us report it and gave some extra wood to get us through the night (Steve did find the bin dumped, but everything was gone inside). The bathrooms were clean and well taken care of. And the sites are sized well and clean.
This is a great little campground with some caveats. I am a tent car camper and prefer to stay away from #vanlife and RV's if possible. This campground makes it hard to do that but there are some sites that work perfect for my style. The showers have hot water but no heat for the room. The bathrooms could use an update, if you are into that kind of thing, but I like mine utilitarian and these work for me. Two shower stalls and two bathroom stalls with two sinks. There are plenty of hiking trails and a great lake to swim in if so desired. My wife and I used this campground as our base while we hiked all around Congaree. Lastly, if you pull something behind your vehicle the road to the campground could be an issue. But for us car campers it's easy in and easy out.
I LOVED this campground. My partner and I stayed four nights in our little teardrop camper (we chose a site with electric and water) and it could not have been more perfect. If you're a giant RV person with expectations of massive concrete pads and lots of amenities, this might not be the place for you, but if you want a beautiful wooded spot with access to great trails and clean, nice bathrooms (full disclosure: they looked a little sketchy from the outside but were clean and delightful), then this campground is for you. Special shout-out to Ranger Andy and his co-worker (whose name I forgot, but good luck to him as he pursues a post-grad degree in entemology!!) for being so helpful and nice and just a delight to talk to. I can't say enough good things about this campground. I'd love to come back and tent-camp in the primitive area--it was so pretty. Campground hosts were friendly and helpful and kept everything spotless. We did occasionally feel we were about to be strafe-bombed, since there is an air-to-ground training ground across the road, but it never lasted long or late.
