Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic Introduce
For Michigan locals who truly cherish the untamed beauty of our state's wilderness, Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic Campground offers an unparalleled experience. Nestled within the vast expanse of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Ontonagon, this campground is a gateway to some of the most spectacular natural vistas Michigan has to offer. It's a place where the towering trees, roaring waterfalls, and the majestic Lake Superior shoreline converge to create an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
This "rustic" designation isn't just a label; it's an invitation to an authentic camping experience, requiring a bit more planning but delivering immense rewards. Imagine disconnecting completely from the digital world – as cell service is minimal to non-existent here – and immersing yourself in pure nature. Reviewers consistently praise the "great views" and the opportunity to "unplug and enjoy nature." It's a paradise for those who genuinely appreciate and respect the great outdoors for its natural enchantment, far from the distractions of everyday life.
Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic Campground is renowned for its outstanding location on the scenic Presque Isle River, just where it meets the powerful waters of Lake Superior. This strategic spot provides easy access to numerous trails that lead to breathtaking natural wonders like Lake of the Clouds, the Summit Peak Observation Tower, and a series of magnificent waterfalls along the Presque Isle River. While the mountain roads can be rough, and preparation is key (think plenty of gas and a spare tire!), the effort is undoubtedly worth it for the stunning vistas and profound sense of peace you'll find here. For Michigan residents seeking to truly experience the wild heart of the Upper Peninsula, this campground offers an ideal and deeply rewarding escape.
Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic Campground is located within the expansive Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, with its address linked to 33303 Headquarters Rd, Ontonagon, MI 49953, USA. However, it's important for Michigan locals to note that the Presque Isle campground unit is situated on the western side of the park, approximately 25 miles west of the main Visitor Center on South Boundary Road, or about 16 miles north of Wakefield via County Road 519. This location places it near the mouth of the Presque Isle River, overlooking Lake Superior.
Accessing the park and this specific campground requires a Michigan State Park pass (Recreation Passport), which can be purchased when renewing your license plate or at the park entrance. While the main park headquarters has a visitor center, the drive to the Presque Isle area is a scenic one, though visitors should be prepared for rough mountain roads. This remote setting contributes to the "unplugged" experience, as cell service is generally unavailable for most phone companies on the mountain. Therefore, advance planning is crucial, including ensuring you have enough gas and a spare tire. Despite its secluded feel, the campground is designed to be accessible by drive-in sites, though pull-through parking for larger vehicles might be challenging. The journey itself is an integral part of the adventure, guiding you deeper into Michigan's majestic wilderness.

10 0ut of 10 , for great views, make sure you have plenty of gas. Mountain roads are rough. Make sure you have a spare. There is no signal for regular cell phones on the mountain for most phone companies. Great way to unplug and enjoy nature. I recommend going to Lake of the Clouds and Presque Isle and the tower if it's open. Make sure you go to the Park Center and pick up a day pass they also have other passes available for the year in order to be able to visit the mountain. You need the state park pass.
Perfectly splendid. A beautiful array of many insects and wild creatures. Arduous access to frigidly refreshing waters of Lake Superior. Far distances between camping sites and the visitor center. Vault toilets. Rustic with a near zero amount of amenities that require planning ahead. A paradise for those who appreciate and respect the great outdoors for all its natural enchantment.
We rolled in on a Sunday afternoon and got the last spot. Campsites practically on top of each other, no privacy or trees. Alot of people with reservations, never showed up, so the good spots were empty. I can saw the waterfalls made it worth it! There are few there and many, many stairs to get to them, also a cool bridge. You can also hike to the river mouth and fish. There are also stairs that lead right to the lake, you can sit on the rocks and watch the sunset right off the water, its amazing!! Out houses were clean and the girl was sanitizing the door handles and toilets!! There is a water pump.
It's a great campground for rustic camping. Sites are wooded or open. They come with a picnic table and a fire ring. Wood available at Ranger station. There is a steep boardwalk down to the beach. You can find yooperlites in the shallows. Easy access to any of the Presque River hiking trails. Vault toilets available, and hand pump water.
A beautiful state park! Went for a day trip from northern Wisconsin. The waterfalls are gorgeous. Pretty easy hike to see them on a very well constructed boardwalk. Pictures do not do it justice.
