Sadly still closed. I walked the site and while I'd call it "nearing completion" there's still lots to be done. The view you can get of the rim is absolutely fantastic though. If you're going here, tell the person at the gate and you won't need to pay for a day-use entry fee to the rec area. Then, at the closed road head right and there are a couple pull-outs here you can dispersed camp for free, although I'd recommend a hammock because it might be a bit tricky to find a flat place for a tent.
Best views i've ever had camping. If you have a capable vehicle, it is well worth the 1hr + drive to get up here. We saw 4 or 5 spots with fire rings on the rim of the canyon. Dont be fooled by the reviews saying that you wont have problems in 2wd as long as you go through the Sand Flats. The last .1 miles would be nearly impossible in most low, 2wd vehicles. We saw a Ford Focus parked below the last stretch, and a Subaru Crosstrek that made it to the top no problem. We made it up in a 1987 RWD camper van, but it was the limit of what the van is capable of. If you come from the Sand Flats, the 9 mile drive is very manageable for most vechicles, up until the last .1 miles or so. If you're looking to camp right on the rim, you definitely need high clearance, but not necessarily 4x4. We nearly turned back, but pushed through to the upper sites despite the van begging me not to. Worth it.
The camping spots you find here are insane and some are right on the cliff ledge. Incredible place but tough to get back to. About 40 minutes dirt road driving to get there. Totally worth it. 4 wheel drive recommended
First off, if you're looking to just get to this camp spot with absolutely no problems and no 4x4 then the easiest route is to come up through Sand Flats Recreational area in Moab, UT. The drive is an easy 30-40 min drive through the rec area. Tell the gate attendant you are only there to camp and to not use their Sand Flats park. This will get you through the park for free otherwise there is a fee to use their park for off roading and such. Once you arrive to the campground area you'll find a place to park your vehicle and then you'll walk up to the best camp spots. If you have a slightly higher clearing vehicle then you can probably make it up to the camp spots fairly easily and can park next to your camp. Views are amazing, the drive is worth it, the weather can change in an instant, and it'll probably be one of your favorite spots to come to.
Successfully drove up in Toyta Prius but this is certainly once in a life time experience (at least, on Prius). If you decide to, be ready to get out of the car every 100 yards to remove rocks impassable for 5 in clearance (or enjoy the road cleaned by me a little bit in late August 2022). Doable? Yes, but very slowly and scratching the bottom. Drivable all the way up, approximately ~100 yards to the rim (can drive in some camping spots that are not right on the rim). Good ATT reception in the top. Plenty of camping spots with magnificent view. Update: after cleaning up the road, drove done almost without scratching the bottom. Still, spare plenty of time if on low clearance. Took me 1h 30 min to Moab.
