Port Crescent State Park Campsite Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Michiganders looking for a prime destination that combines the best of the Great Lakes shoreline with deep nature immersion, the Port Crescent State Park Campsite stands out as a jewel at the tip of the 'Thumb.' This expansive 640-acre state park is located along three miles of gorgeous sandy shoreline on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay near the charming town of Port Austin. It offers a unique and modern camping experience, blending traditional RV and tent sites with innovative, unique lodging options like geodesic domes and cabins.
Port Crescent is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it is a full-service recreation area dedicated to connecting visitors with the natural splendor of the Mitten State. It is famously home to a designated Dark Sky Preserve, ensuring that campers have an unobstructed view of the night sky—a rare and spectacular sight for those escaping city lights. The park is highly popular, especially on weekends and during special events like the annual Halloween weekend, where the festive atmosphere is a testament to the strong camping community here.
The campsite is a gateway to the entire Port Austin area, providing easy access to hiking, paddling, and the quaint shops and restaurants of the nearby town. Whether you're after a restful, quiet midweek retreat or a fun, family-focused holiday by the beach, Port Crescent offers the location and amenities to make your Lake Huron getaway unforgettable.
Location and Accessibility
Port Crescent State Park Campsite is perfectly situated at the northern end of Michigan’s Thumb, offering a true "tip of the Thumb" experience.
Official Address: Park Rd, Port Austin, MI 48467, USA
The campground is conveniently located just off M-25, the scenic route that hugs the Lake Huron shoreline. It is approximately five miles southwest of the village of Port Austin. It is important to note that the Day-Use Area and the Campground/Overnight Lodging options are situated about two miles apart, each with separate entrances, so guests should confirm their destination upon arrival.
Accessibility to the beach is excellent, with direct access from the campground via a small hill, as well as a beautiful wooden boardwalk that parallels the shoreline, offering scenic vistas of Saginaw Bay. While the park is generally easily accessible, visitors should be aware that during peak season and special events, the campsite can feel crowded, and driving through the park roads may be a “tight squeeze” due to the popularity and density of vehicles.
Services Offered
Port Crescent State Park Campsite provides modern and diverse facilities and services to accommodate all types of Michigan campers.
- Modern Campsites: The park features 142 modern campsites, which offer electric hookups (30- or 50-amp service) and are generally large and shaded by oak and pine trees. Some sites even feature waterfront views along the Saginaw Bay.
- Diverse Lodging Options: In addition to traditional tent and RV sites, the park offers 10 unique overnight rentals, including geodesic domes, full-amenity cottages (with private bath/kitchen), electric-only cabins, and rustic mini cabins.
- Modern Bath Facilities: The campground includes two modern toilet/shower buildings (East and West Bathhouses). While cleanliness is generally maintained, with daily closures from 1-3 pm for cleaning, some facilities may show age, though the East Bathhouse is noted as very modern.
- Sanitation Station: A dedicated sanitation station is available near the campground office for registered campers, offering potable water and two lanes for convenient dumping.
- Recreational Equipment: The unique Geodesic Domes and electric-only cabins include mini-kitchenettes with a mini-fridge and microwave. All sites and rentals include a picnic table and a fire ring/charcoal grill combo.
- Accessibility Features: The park is committed to universal accessibility, featuring an accessible walkway to the water and a beach wheelchair for visitors to borrow, ensuring everyone can enjoy the Lake Huron shoreline.
Features / Highlights
Port Crescent State Park is celebrated for several unique, high-value features that make it a standout destination for Michigan residents.
- Designated Dark Sky Preserve: This is one of Michigan's only six designated dark sky preserves, providing exceptionally low light pollution. Visitors are guaranteed an uncompromised view of the cosmos, making it the perfect location to set up a telescope and enjoy the brilliance of the Milky Way and stunning celestial events.
- Three Miles of Sandy Lake Huron Shoreline: The park boasts a magnificent stretch of sandy beach along Saginaw Bay, known for its rock-free shoreline and warm, shallow swimming areas. It is the perfect spot for sunbathing, building sandcastles, and enjoying the magnificent sunsets over the water.
- Unique Geodesic Domes: These distinctive, environment-friendly rentals offer a comfortable and stylish glamping experience. While the skylight may not be ideal for stargazing from inside, the domes provide a queen bed, seating area, and a mini kitchenette, perfect for a cozy stay (Note: bring a mattress pad and slippers, as the mattress is thin and the floor is concrete).
- Extensive Trail System: The park features nearly 3.5 miles of trails, including the Day Use trail through wooded areas and sand dunes, and the 2.5-mile Steel Bridge Trails in the Organizational Area, offering scenic overlooks and opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing in winter, and birding.
- Proximity to Port Austin: The charming town of Port Austin is just a short drive away, offering visitors cute shops, local restaurants, a farmers market, and a convenient launch point for paddling trips to the famous Turnip Rock.

What is Worth Choosing
Port Crescent State Park Campsite is absolutely worth choosing for Michigan residents because it offers the best combination of Lake Huron beach access and astronomical wonder in a single, well-developed State Park setting. It caters to every type of camper, from those with large RVs (though sites can be a tight fit) to those seeking a unique, non-traditional stay in a geodesic dome or cabin.
You should choose this park if you are an aspiring astronomer, a beach lover, or a family seeking both recreation and relaxation. The designation as a Dark Sky Preserve is a tremendous draw, offering Michiganders a view of the night sky few other places in the lower peninsula can match. Furthermore, the sandy, rock-free shoreline is superior for swimming and sunset viewing compared to many other points along Lake Huron. While the park can be lively and loud during festive weekends, opting for a weekday visit or securing one of the secluded sites ensures you can fully enjoy the tranquil solitude and pristine nature that Port Crescent State Park is meant to deliver.

We’re currently staying in a geodesic dome for two nights this first weekend in October. It’s their annual Halloween weekend where campers decorate to try to win the best Halloween site contest. It’s crowded, LOUD (the loudest talker ever is camping across from us 🤭), bright (no one turns lights off at night), and a very tight squeeze driving through. The bathrooms are somewhat clean. They close every day from 1-3pm for cleaning. The dome itself is pretty cool. Terrible mattress so bring a mattress pad (you have to bring your own linens anyway). And has a concrete floor so bring slippers!! Outside: huge fire pit with Adirondack chairs, charcoal grill. Inside: mini fridge, microwave and cute decor. The skylight im the dome is pretty useless for stargazing so be prepared to be outside if looking at the universe is in your plans. We set up our new telescope on the beach. The beach is down a small hill behind the dome. Will post an inside pic before we leave. No dogs allowed in the domes. Not sure why not since the floor is concrete. Would recommend a stay here probably during the week if you want a quieter experience. And if you’re planning on bringing a camper, the sites are small. We have a 40’ fifth wheel and haven’t seen a site where it would fit. Being close to Port Austin, the state park and dark park is a plus, with hiking, stargazing, cute shops and restaurants.
Nice campground with beach access. Office closes intermittently near the end of the season. Beautiful sunsets.
We were first timers, staying in early October, winterizing the trailer, then taking it for winter storage. The park was clean and clearly had a recent rehab. It was a great place to stay. The only negative was a lack of wifi with enough strength for Internet, and T-Mobile had the minimum of signal.
Location and site views are awesome. Bathrooms / showers were adequate. Overall good experience. Would recommend.
The renovation is almost done and it looks INCREDIBLE!! The Harbor is getting the new dock installed soon, Will be the most modern harbor in the state
