Porter Lake Campground

Sopchoppy, FL 32358, USA

Introduce

Porter Lake Campground, located in Sopchoppy, FL 32358 within the Apalachicola National Forest, offers a unique camping experience within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category. Situated right off Forest Road FH13, this is a free, no-fee campground operating on a first-come, first-served basis.

The campground features a dispersed camping area accessible via an inclined road. There are no clearly marked individual campsites, offering a more rustic and self-sufficient camping environment. Basic amenities include a single vault toilet and a water tap for campers' use. Several previous fire spots indicate areas where campfires have been held.

The environment around Porter Lake Campground includes a swampy water area located under a bridge, which also features a small boat or kayak ramp, providing access for those interested in exploring the water. One visitor noted good AT&T cell service at the location.

Based on visitor experiences, the campground can be less crowded, with one report of only a tenter and a pop-up camper present during a December stay. However, potential visitors should be aware of the natural environment, as one review mentions the likelihood of bad mosquito conditions during warmer seasons and advises caution regarding bugs and alligators.

Notably, the campground offers free camping and includes restrooms (a vault toilet) and fire pits. The observation of lightning bugs at night adds to the natural ambiance. For local users seeking a no-cost camping option in the Apalachicola National Forest with basic amenities and access to a swampy water area with a boat/kayak ramp, Porter Lake Campground may be a consideration. However, potential campers should be prepared for dispersed camping conditions and be mindful of the local wildlife, particularly bugs and alligators.

Porter Lake Campground in Apalachicola National Forest is right off the side of Forest Road FH13. Free no fee, inclined road down into a dispersed area with no clear marked sites, 1 vault toilet, water tap and a few previous fire spots. Swampy water area under a bridge with a small boat or kayak ramp. Att cell service was good. We stayed overnight in December waiting on a site at Camel Lake. 1 tenter and a pop-up camper was there. Imagine the mosquitos are bad in season.

Restrooms and fire pits. First come first serve free camping. Saw lightning bugs here at night. Beware of bugs and gators

Serviceable campground within the National Forest. Right on FH13 which is relatively busy with traffic so kinda noisy. No picnic tables or trashcans. Whitehead lake is nearby but quieter and includes those things mentioned previously.

A very good camp to spend the night when hiking the Florida Trail. Water, compost toilets and quiet.

National forest. Free dry camping. Wonderful peaceful place. Bring bug spray but other than that if passing through stop and enjoy.
