For Montana locals eager to embrace our state's iconic outdoor lifestyle, Powell Campground presents an exceptional opportunity for adventure, relaxation, and memorable experiences.
Powell Campground is strategically located near Lolo, MT 59847, USA, positioning it in a truly unique and appealing spot within the vast natural landscapes of the region. While it carries a Montana address, it's important for locals to understand its precise geographical context. The campground is situated in north-central Idaho, officially within the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, at an elevation of approximately 3,400 feet. It is adjacent to the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River, with the immense Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness just across the river.
For Montanans, particularly those in the western part of the state, Powell Campground is conveniently accessible. It's located approximately 60 miles southwest of Missoula, MT, along US Highway 12, often referred to as the Lewis and Clark Highway. This scenic highway winds along the narrow river canyon, offering breathtaking views of evergreen trees and large rock outcroppings, making the drive an integral part of the outdoor experience.
The campground itself has "three paved loops" and is easily accessible from Highway 12 via Road #102, which is also paved. This makes it highly accessible for both tent campers and those with RVs, including larger rigs up to 40 feet. While the setting is remote, the proximity to a "small general store, fuel, lodging and a restaurant" at Lochsa Lodge, which is within walking distance, is a significant convenience given that there are "aren’t any services for many miles" along this stretch of Highway 12. This unique combination of remote wilderness and accessible amenities makes Powell Campground a practical and attractive destination for Montana residents seeking a balance of adventure and comfort.

We loved this camping excursion. The staff at lodge, food, camp sites, little store, etc. everything was splendid! Planning another trip!
Nice campground overall. The proximity of Lochsa Lodge restaurant, general store and Sinclair pump is great since there aren’t any services for many miles. The general store has a pay phone. The sites themselves are pretty small, especially on the interior circle of sites. Many of the lower level sites, like ours which was A16, are on a grade and it’s difficult to set up for tent camping. Bathrooms are relatively clean but there was no liquid soap, just a very worn bar of soap. Now that I’m better prepared, I’d camp here again.
Powell campground is a terrific place to rest, relax, fish, hike and explore. Very short hike down to river. Highly recommend. The Lolo Ranger station is nearby. Sites are far enough apart to give you a bit of privacy. 34 campsites, half are non electric and the other half have 30/50 amp service. Half of the sites are reservable, the other half are first come first serve. Sites are easy back in. Some are pull through. Vault toilets are located in two places. Water available around the campground with non threaded faucets. Dumpsters on site. No dump station. Camp host on site.
Enjoyed overnight stay here in Aug ‘19. Located in a very remote area with no cell service. The campground is wooded and well spaced. It abuts the Lohese River and our lab had a blast swimming. Beautiful area and almost everyone had 4 wheelers except us. Facilities clean but no showers.
Beautiful campground by the river, host was kind to me. Walking distance to the lodge and restaurant made it ideal setup for me on my moto-camping trip. 99 miles of twisty road is heaven for motorcycle riders, it ll be hard to forget that day and i will return again.
